Windows Xp Activation

Makes me so angry... *predicament*
Well I just reformatted my hard drive this morning. Everything went ok, but for some reason or another I cannot activate my Windows XP because it says, "Code registered too many times". Why can I not just use the same key I used before? Is there a way to unactivate one of my other keys?

Is there any other way? My product key came with my dad's Dell, but it was payed for. I already used it when I finished building my new comp. Is there a way to do this remotely?

It's a precaution taken by Microsoft to prevent both piracy and installing on multiple computers. You're given something like 5 activations before it cuts you off. It needs to be more than what it is though (5 times, no?) as i've run mine out already by moving my HDD to other computers to test hardware. Anyway, your best bet is to get another legal key and use that (I've got 3 legal versions of WinXP in the house, all OEM versions from new systems) so i'm not going to run out any time soon.

EDIT: Yeah, call them, or use the 10 day activation period to contact them online, explain the situation and get them to activate it. Dispite whatever preconceptions you have about Microsoft, they're actually pretty friendly and helpful at times.

The problem is, I only used this particular key 2 times. It came with my dad's Dell, and I used it for that comp and for my comp, and that is only twice! I don't want to obtain another legal key, as that would cost me about $100, which I don't have. Is there another solution?

As someone else already said, call Microsoft and they will activate it for you. As in, it won't cost you money.
