Trying to get an older machine to run NS
I have some friends come by every now and then for a simple LAN night.
Unfortunately one of the machines we have is an old 400 mhz pentium with win 98 (decent graphics card). NS hangs just before it gets into the game (right after connecting when the screen slides up everything locks up).
Additional note-I am not running NS through steam. (this could be the problem, if it is, can NS be run through steam in offline mode and we'd still be able to set up the LAN?)
Thanks in advance

Are you saying NS doesn't work without steam? (which I know isn't wholely true as I can run NS just fine on my XP box without steam, via the LAN)
Are you saying that it may have troubles without steam but will work with steam?
If I run it via steam (in offline mode) will it matter if I don't use steam on the other computers in the LAN?
To sum it up, it is not possible to play any current version of NS or HL or any other mod for HL without Steam. Steam also has to be on every computer that you are going to use to play NS or any other HL mod. Each person will also need his own account on Steam. Go to http://www.steampowered.com to find out how to do everything.
And I have no idea how you ran NS without Steam. The only way for you to do that is to have an old version of NS that doesn't use Steam.
Hope that clears it up mostly.
you get random wierd errors (like NS hanging up as you described, plus lots of graphical glitches)
just install Steam on all computers, download and install HL (just boot up the training mission), Install NS and then exit and set Steam to go to off line mode.
look, think of HL as an OS. You have 2 versions, HLWON and HLSteam.
you are trying to use an older version of the OS to run a program designed for the new version.
nuff said.
help help help when i initaize hl by riding the tram for 3.0 on steam or doing hazard cores i go to install it tells me i need to close steam so i do after i instal the game under c:/programfiles/steam/steamapps/myname/half-lif it still does not work i open up setam its not there i restarde my pc too

Sounded like he said he wasn't even using WON.
I'm actually really intriuged
1 copy Half life platnium (includes counterstrike, opposing force etc.)
1 copy NS 3.5
1 copy 1.1.0.0 patch for half life (or whatever is the latest downloadable patch, google for it)
Install half life, mix throughly with patch (i.e. run that too)
Add in one part NS 3.5 (install NS into your half life folder, not steam)
Do not boil (steam is not required. If you do wish to use it though it won't interfere)
Serves as many as necessary (Half life plat doesn't require the CD to run)
Notes-
Have this set up on 3 boxes
1. Win 98, 400 mhz
2. win xp home, 1.x ghz (not sure, friends computer)
3. Win xp pro, 3.0 ghz
Results
1. Aforementioned crash problem.2
2. Run with D3D, seems to work just fine
3. Run with OpenGL, annoying graphics problem (menu gets 'stuck') fixed by hitting escape and resume. Works just fine, Hivemind bot and RCBot work fine.
I'll be taking my win 98 box and putting xp pro on it, so we'll see if that changes things (I suspect it will)
This set up also worked with counter strike (not fully updated, i think i use it as 1.0.0.6 or something), firearms 2.8/2.9.
Also have steam on my computer, it doesn't interfere(it takes half life and makes a copy of it, so no need to worry)
Dan
he can't play on WON b/c it is DEE EE DEE DEAD!
Even if steam was to go down today, we could still use a Steam install of HL to play NS on LANs.
however as was pointed out, a WON install of HL will cause funky errors, I would sugest simply ussing a Steam install.
And if you are tryign to do this illegaly (aka ussing 1 CD key for each) all you have to do is sign into Steam ussing the same ID on each ocmputer and then set themm all to offline mode (I tihnk this works atleast)
