specs:
- Asus p4s800, 2400 mhz PIV
- Sound: on board
- GFX: ati radeon 9600xt (latest ATI drivers)
- RAM: 512 mb
- Windows XP pro, updated
- 3.0 beta 5 NS
RELEVENT POSTS
how it happens (strafe + console) is mentioned in this post also with ATI video card:
"Ns Crashing Ati Omega Drivers, CRASHING"
(i don't think it has anything to do with omega drivers)
people experiencing freeze ups with ati 9600 supported in this post:
"Game Freezes Rig"
Yet another post possibly supporting this (GOD WHY WON"T PEOPLE SHOW THEIR SPECS):
"Crashing Ns, Within One Minute In The Game"
(ok i won't go past page 5 of the posts, i am tired)
what i know:
I reproduced this problem by strafing left (D key) and pressing console button at the same time. The freeze is REALLY BAD, no way of closing the game have to reset comp. This happened to me very recently, could be due to beta 5 as mentioned in the posts or a recent steam update.
temporary solution:
DONT STRAFE AND PRESS CONSOLE BUTTON!!!

You might also want to put your driver version in there.
Try the cats too.
Also, try updating your motherboard bios.
I had a lot of problems with my mobo and my video card interacting, and they went away when I upgraded the mobo bios. It happened when I did certain things (similiar to your strafing+console freeze).
i got the latest real ati drivers, the ones with a catalyst control panel, just got it on monday
i have tried to disable console so that i don't do this by accident, but i can't, anyone know how to disable it for ns?, would really appreciate it as temporary solution, console key is deadly now
E.G. use esdf instead of wasd.
You seem to think that it is a problem with your graphics card. If that's the case, then I'd try installing the Omega Drivers. On my old 9600SE, the catalysts acted real funny, but the omegas worked very well.
Hope this helps as a temporary solution.
ati radeon 9550
clearly an ati-related problem
It works fine on my desktop, though, which IS using the official Catalyst drivers. (Radeon 9600)
I'll try installing the Omega drivers on my desktop, and see if they cause this problem.
(edit) I've installed the Omega drivers, and they don't cause any problems on my desktop. On my laptop, I tried repeatedly opening the console, which does crash and reboot. (no blue screen though, I turned off reboot on blue screen)

Zirconium, it is possible to install the catalyst drivers on a Mobility.
(I had thought it not the case also for quite a while, it does work).
(Note, this also varies betwen SP1, and SP2, and also between OEM installs! FFS Microsoft, get your frelling act together!)
1. Run the Cataylst install, which will extract all the files to a "C:\ATI" folder.
2. Cancel the install.
3. Go to Device Manager (hey, anyone else know about "Windows Break" shotcut?)
4. GO to your specifc display adapter, and right click, Update driver.
5. Don't go to the internet (waste of time), Select from "Specifc Location"
6. Select "Don't Search. I will choose which **** driver to install."
7. Basically you want to go to "Have Disk"
8. You'll have to browse for the fodler that the Catalyst driver installer left (pice of crap doesn't clean up after itself, but this makes it easier for us!), which shoul dbe something like "C:\ATI\SUPPORT\wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-051-040825a-017633C\Driver\2KXP_INF"
9. You'll get a driver list. Go down the list, and find the specifc chipset name for your ATI. You find also, that it may be listed several timesm, as well as with the "-SECONDARY" option. Just choose the first one in the list. "RAEDON 9600 SERIES"
10. Hit next, blah, install, reboot if necessary.
And you should be there.
Any of you guys having problems, do you happen to have the ATIHot key program running? its the one designed to accept keyboard shortcuts for changing display settings.
I dont' run with it, as I find it a waste of CPU and memory, and always remove it from start-up from the registry. I have 2 computers with Ati cards with the catalyst drivers, and have never had a lock-up involving the console.
On another note, I'd really like to disable the console completly. (Solve problems all around, and stop me from hitting it mid play, like the menu!) Anyone know how to do this with HL1?
I think if you go into your config.cfg file and add at the top "console 0" without the quotes, then console will be disabled.
