My Personal Tips & Tricks

They may actually help..
OK! Let me start off by saying a lot of this will prolly already have been said in previous posts, but let me make my own list anyway!

In General:

- Stay polite at all times. It's very very annoying if someone starts swearing.

- Compliments. Feel free to compliment someone if they did something nice, like kill you in a spectacular way or defend an area nicely. It shows a sporting spirit!

- Don't overuse voicechat. I know sometimes it can be a long wait, especially as a Gorge, but don't spam it too much. It will only result in people muting you and they wont be able to hear what you say when it really IS important.

- Join the team with the least players. They may not be winning, but its not going to be fun if one side has way more players than the other. After all, a game should be a challenge.

- Don't be affraid to ask teammates what to do. There will always be nasty people who will call you a n00b or whatnot. There IS, however, usually someone around that will be willing to help you.

- There were, are and always will be cheaters/spammers/whatnot. Try to ignore them as much as possible. If they do ruin a game either make a request for an admin or try and find another server. The odds are that if an admin was around, he/she prolly would have done something about the individual already. Swearing at them just gives them what they want: attention.

- And really, just have FUN. It's a game, a computer game, a lot of people come online to play it to pass the time or to have fun. Don't let it get to you if you get creamed at first. Persevere and you will do fine!

For Marines:

- Listen to the Commander. Odds are the Commander is an experienced player and knows what to do. Follow his/her orders and you will see a lot more action.

- Thanking the Commander. If the Commander does something for you, don't rush off. Thank him/her for this, it's nice to feel appreciated, both as a marine and as a Commander.

- Don't forget to load up on ammo before leaving the base, the 100 standard LMG (Light Machine Gun) bullets really aren't a lot. And spend a few extra moments loading up the pistol as well. You will be amazed how often those few extra bullets save your life.

- Stand Guard. When you are at a virgin point and new buildings are getting set up, look what the other players are doing. If 3 of them build, stand guard. Aliens are EVERYWHERE and with 3 marines having their backs turned, they are easy picking for a pack of Skulks.

- If someone requests health and it gets dropped, don't rush towards it unless you REALLY need it or there is some spare. Picking up to fill up 10 HP while someone else is critical can be a real joykiller. If you need some too, request some through the menu and more than usually the commander will drop some for you too.

- Don't go wandering off alone. They may be small, but even a single skulk can chomp up a marine that is foolish enough to wander off alone. Follow some teammates and look what they are doing. Odds are they will move again once reloaded and healed. Don't stray or you will pay!

- Don't spam with requests. If your resources are low to average (under 100) and you can't get armor/jetpack/heavy machine gun/whatnot, odds are the Commander has better things planned for it. You can do enough damage with a fully loaded LMG. In the time you spend asking for better weapons/armor you could have killed 3 aliens. You'll respawn soon enough.

- Leave something for others. If players have something planned and you see a HMG or Armor or whatnot getting dropped, dont rush over and pick it up. Maybe it's better if you walk along with standard armament and try to backup the squad. If you die, odds are the weapons will be lost and that would be an even greater shame.

- Establish a marching order. When you do have weapons and others have a shotgun/grenade launcher/etc try to establish a marching order. The grenadier should never walk up front. Always have the heavier guns in front and have one man at the back that glances back every now and then. More often than not the grenadier is dead before the heavy gunners realise theyve been backstabbed.

- Going for Commander. Although playing Commander is very fun, it is also very demanding. Try and get a feel for the game before going commander, the most obvious things may not always be aparent. Some tight spots will only be found after you played for a while. If you still want to go Commander, be sure to ask your fellow players if this is alright. A lot of the times players will be willing to give up a round just to give someone a chance. Sometimes, people will not want it because they want revenge on those darn aliens. Respect this, wait for another time or practice solo or on a LAN.

- Team Say. Don't forget to use Team Say. A lot of times the aliens find out a nice little tactic and can prepare for it because someone used the Say command (broadcasting it to everybody) and not the Team Say (which only sends the message to your teammates).

- Welding. When you get a welder and you didn't want to have get it, either drop it or stay behind and repair stuff. Everybody needs to play a part in this war on xenoforms. You can weld teammates too! This will repair their armor!

- Vents. Keep an eye on those vents, aliens can come from ANYWHERE!

- Have FUN! Try and have FUN! It's a game! Try things like using communication to enhance the experience or say things like "Yes, Sir!" or "Let's cleanse this place of the infestation!". Getting into your role will enhance the experience for both yourself and your teammates.

The Kharaa

- The first rush. One of the most important moments in play: The First Rush. As soon as the round starts, follow someone that knows the way and rush the marine base. Skulks are cheap and expendable, but the damage they do to the marines at the beginning can win or lose a game.

- Hive Sight. Hive sight is all those circles you see onscreen. The white ones are teammates, the red ones are teammates or structures being attacked and yellow ones are parasited enemies or structures. They will help you get around! So pay attention!

- Resources. Unlike marines, aliens do not share their resources, instead they each get their own. This make them more individual, but remember: you still need to be a team player to win!

- Evolving Upgrades. At the right side of your screen you will see blinky icons once upgrades are available. You will get to know them soon enough. Go through the menu and find the upgrade you want. Everyone has their own favorites! They usually cost 2 resources, but they can make a WORLD of difference.

- Carapace. Maybe one of the most important upgrades at first. It allows you to sustain a lot more damage, so you can chomp the marines a lot more before going down!

- Regeneration. If you like Hit & Run tactics, regeneration is the way to go! Just go to a safe spot and let yer health get back to 100%!

- Cloaking. Always fun for stalking, the other upgrades require a bit more experience, cloaking is always good, no matter what!

- Celerity. It's always good to run faster!

- Adrenaline. Mainly THE upgrade for anything that's not a skulk. It makes your yellow bar go up up to twice as fast as normal!

- Going Skulk. Skulks are the fast and furious beasts that make up most of the Kharaa army. They can climb walls, go into vents. Use this! Don't walk along the floor as easy prey when you could be running on the ceiling. If you accidentally run into a marine, it will surprise him a lot more id Death drop from Above!

- Parasiting. If you run into a cluster of turrets or a big defense setup, parasite them! They will show up for everyone, either warning teammates about the dangerous spot or giving a good idea where the next offense should go!

- Going Gorge. Although going Gorge may seem like a good idea at times, Gorges get priority when resources are given. If you go Gorge you may slow down another one that is saving up for a hive. And what's more important, one offense chamber or that second hive?

- Healing. Use your health spray! Often! It heals teammates and structures! It can make a world a difference!

- Webbing. Webbing can be VERY important. If they are placed right, a webbed marines can be easy pickings for any skulk/fade/offense tower!

- Going Lerk. Lerks are for when you got a grip of the mechanics. They're fun to play, but more often than not, a support class. Flap around, a lot, they are the fastest of all classes. With adrenaline backing flying up, they can practically fly forever!

-Needles. Needles are good for shooting from a hidden spot while constantly going back into hiding! Prolly the best way early on to take out turrets!

- Umbra. Umbra around a turret can make it useless for a short while, a short while in which any skulk/fade can completely destroy it!

- Gas Cloud (or whatever its called). This is powerful! Shoot it from out of hiding and watch the dead people drop around you! Especially good with Scent of Fear (a sensory upgrade) which will then show an orange blob for any hurt marine, making it easy to see if one approaches to kill you.

- Going Fade. Fades really make up the heavy artillery of the Kharaa. Their acidic shots can be lethal to almost everything in the game. Try and have some backup with you when you go raid a marine spot. The hooks are a really good melee weapon, tearing down marines in seconds! Be sure to get adrenaline when you go fade, because your yellow bar will run out REALLY quickly!

- Acid Rocket. Not much to say, splash them darn marines!

- Blink. A good way to travel quickly or through defenses, cannot say much about it as I rarely use it but practice using it, you may like it!

- Bile Bomb. Aaah, there we go! Throw these in an arc and watch the corpses pile up! Just watch out now to hit yourself, you can hurt yourself with them!

- Going Onos. It's big, it's bad, it's ugly, it has dreadlocks! The Onos! Once your third hive is achieved, you can go Onos for a "mere" 70 resources. Some people will only go Onos from that time on, not realising it can be too slow to get anywhere in time. Think before you go Onos, it may be better to travel near the spot of action as a skulk and then evolve.

- Bite. Just a very very powerful bite.

- Paralysis. Not as useless as it seems, it can pin one of those pesky hit & run marines to the spot. He can then be munched away at the skulk's leisure.

- Charge. While charging run into anything you see, it will automatically take damage. If combined with Primal Scream it can be VERY devastating! Activate it and just gallop at anything you see, it will take damage as you trample it.

- Primal Scream. Use this before any attack. It will powerup you and your teammates, and if you picked adrenaline as an upgrade, the empty bar should not be a problem! Then rush in and pound away at any structure or marine you see!

- Take one for the team. Don't be affraid to give up your life as a skulk to create a diversion. Even just scouting the dangers ahead can make it easier for the heavier Kharaa to have an idea of what to expect.

- Boring one for the team. When you find a hive and you have a few spare resources, find a safe spot, announce that you're gonna save up for a hive and go Gorge. It may be boring, but somebody's gotta do it! If the team can spare a skulk, one skulk should stay with the Gorge to protect him.

- Have FUN! Once more and for a final time, have FUN! Playing Kharaa is difficult but very rewarding. It requires a lot of practice to get the most out of certain skills. Stick to it, broodling, and soon you will be a champion to the Hive Queen!

I prolly forgot a lot of things, feel free to add anything you find important. This could help new players find their way quicker...oh well my fingers are tired from typing this much, ill go have a coffee and see how it turns out.

And remember: The NS Community is a new one and a pretty tightly knit one already. If you're a willing and nice player, people will always react nicely. Enjoy!

Nice list of useful tips. One note though:

    - Resources. Unlike marines, aliens do not share their resources, instead they each get their own. This make them more individual, but remember: you still need to be a team player to win!
If an alien is full on resources, his resources are given to all the other alien players instead. If in the early game the skulks don't evolve or upgrade, this can mean a huge boost for the gorge saving for the hives once the skulks get 33 rps.
  • natenate Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8321Members
actually aliens do share their resources. they are just spent individually. gorges gain 3 times the normal resources other aliens would. but that is deducted from the resources given out to others.
