If your getting less than about 70 fps, i feel for you, cause i know from experiance that that makes your eyes sting like hell after about 30 mins. There maybe is no visible difference, but there is a physical difference, for exampe, setting refresh rate to 60hz, - hurts, 100hz mmm nicer, 200 hz and you get no eye strain. Not to mention the audable difference, at 50fps gun sounds like its firing slow, at 100, its nice and fast. When someone with high ping and low FPS attacks you, you can tell as you die from 20 foot away from his melee attack , with high ping alone its only about 5 foot. The repocussions of not upgrading your PC hurts everyone!!! #

I had a 32mb GF2 GTS, that played NS at constant 100 fps, then when it got steamified it dropped, and i don't know why

Remember to take into consideration that FPS isnt just GFX card and CPU based, also RAM and HDD speed too.

you can't bash his computer without knowing what settings he is playing on. maybe he's running 1600x1200 with 16xAF and 8xAA, with triliniar filtering and max effects on and tons of porn downloading in the background. that might explain why he dips to 80 fps once in a while

But that's what I'm doing, and it gives no dips for me, on my comparably ancient Radeon 9500 Pro.

There's a lot more to a computer then just your video card.
There's a lot more to running software then just the target application.

What... But... How? How is that possible? I've got an x800 XT and my fps can't even begin to compare, and I use lower of every single setting you mentioned.

Care to compare hl2 fps?

the most FPS you need is 55. 40 is good. below 20, you may have problems, after all, the human eye can only see, 13 i think? "FPS" i would like some HL2 console commands to increase FPS.

Bah, that rumor about human eyes seeing only 13 FPS is false. The frames that games use are, well, frames. Basically put, games use still pictures but they just flash very fast on your monitor. The frames that our eyes see are the same kind that movie type cameras use. They take a picture, but it's not a still, it's a blur, and simply take many of these blurs, and mold them together. Even though movies only run at about 25 of these blurs per second, they look smooth because our eyes are simply snapping these blurs together.

Please don't quote me on this though, as I'm not 100% sure.

Mine doesn't chug, although it's fully unlocked.

AMD 64 2800+ @ 3200+ specifications (2.2 Gigahertz)
1024MB DDRSDRAM PC3200 @ 220 Mhz CPU/10
80 Gigabyte 7200RPM 8MB Cache Western Digital HDD
ASUS 'K8N' nForce 3 Motherboard
BFGTech 6800 OC 16/6 375/850

8X AA/ 16X AF 1280 by 1024 constant 100.

Oh, and I wouldn't call it 12x TAA. When I used an ATi card, I noticed no increased image quality with 6x TAA over 6x AA. Didn't really do anything for me.

-EDIT-
Just saw you use 100 Hz at 1600 by 1200. Damn, nice monitor. What'd you pay for it?
