Modding Xbox's

Oh teh fun!
Today, me and a friend at school were trying to fix a xbox his cousin gave him because it would not boot up. Since we both take an electronics class in the vocational school for half the day, we figured we would work on it there. We took it apart, and started looking at some things, and came to the conclusion that it's the hard drive since it was making irregular noises and beeping. But on another note, I noticed that the green light around the button was made of 2 3-lead LED's (light emitting diodes, the thing that glows by your power button on your computer) since it changed colors. Well, I pointed it out to my friend, and we flipped the diodes around, since the base is in the middle there was no bending, just desolder flip and solder. It turned out good, but he ended up messing up the xbox completely when he tried to do a quick fix on the hard drive.
When we were messing with the broken xbox some more, I came across a cool website that has tons of tutorials on how to do simple mods, with tutorials on how to do the red power light like I stated above.
If you follow a tutorail on how to change the light from green to red, I suggest just flipping the 2 LED's around instead of fooling with the wires, since you could short it out easy and fry your whole xbox if you dont do it properly.

I plan on painting my xbox red along the spaces off the X and painting my jewel (green circle with the XBOX) red to match. Perhaps I will order some red cold cathode lights for it later.
For people modding their xbox, post some screenshots, I'll post mine once I get it painted and whatnot.

If I had an X-box, I'd paint it white and give it a red x. OF DOOM! Image not found!

replaced the HDD with a lardger one
installed linux
set it up as an IRC server
set it up to remotly controll it as a media center (and you can tell it to download files off of his file server)
he wired a USB hub to a XBox plug so he can use flash drives with it.
anything else...
oh yah, he never reinstalled the ability to play Xbox games

Well, 120GB with modchip and some mods related to DVD playback seems enough to me lol
120GB is enough to backup a ENTIRE frigging HDD when using it as a backup HDD.
Never thought about using XBOX as a server though
Softmodding also is a massive bonus to it. I softmodded mine in about 5 minutes, now it has a fully fledged Media Centre on it (XBMC) which can play a whole manner of video and audio formats, i also have a region free DVD program (DVD-x) which also circumvents the Xbox's need for the "DVD kit" to watch videos, and there's the bonus of the likes of tunneling programs to play games online without an Xbox Live subscription.

no, installing window on an IMac is not possible, as it usses compleatly different hardware.
it is also installing a meh OS over a good OS.
Installing Linux on an XBox is installing a GOOD OS over an nonexisting pos
