i had been following ns' development for, what, half a year maybe, before it was finally released. i bought half-life for it. i upgraded my pc for it. i got an internet connection for it (really!). finally, the Day came when God^H^H^HFlayra decided to release the most awesome game in (recorded) human history. The first game I remember was me joining the marine team on ns_whatever (i-never-remember-the-mapnames!). i spawned into something that would later (it was the first day of release after all!) be known as a turret farm. about 30 seconds later i was briefed by my teammates that the aliens had taken the whole map and we were locked in this marine start. then, an onos and a fade came walking in. the rest is history
because of NS, i'm finally getting into photoshop editing; my friend gonna introduce the program to me soon...
i'm going into programming too; i've mostly forgotten everything i've learned about C++ (which i learned 1 1/2 years ago...basics only) but i hope to learn it fully in the future.
a personal problem is that this game is too addictive ; i'm gradually ignoring more and more work.

I have honestly not touched NS since the summer of '03. Pretty bad, eh?
Thats TWO years ago! But I still have the good memories.. and oddly enough I still hang around the forums, heh.
Anyways, I remember my first day of NS - I went ramboing and ended up in a deserted part of the map. (Back then we didn't have those minimaps). I heard something squeeking, chuckling and flapping about somewhere on the roof.. (I was in a big, open, tall room with lots of hidey-holes somewhere near the ceiling).
Then, a lerk flew out, perched on a ledge, and shot me with a barrage of it's awesome spikes. Man, those were the days...
But since then.. NS just seems kind of... bland. =/ I hope this next release sparks it up a bit.

thats exactly where I got my first games of NS in, it suggested to go rine if you were new but I joined aliems and promptly went battle fatty.
Halloween that day was so much fun, and so scary, and so confusing. People were actually using their voices to communicate! how novel! and they were cursing at me because i gestated as a useful gorge, and was building mcs infront of a HA train, instead of the all powerful offence chamber. rightclick? eh?
went marines, and found all these nice machines in the room, "ooo, it allows access to advanced weapons", so i click everything!!
years later, im older, still spend so much time on it. Is the very best online game i have ever played!, got the t-shirt and baseball cap
I remember when I first played. I didn't know what to do, so I kept getting ambushed by skulks and then I finally killed a gorge (I was actually scared of them until I played as one and found out how weak they are).

I remember one of the first round I did, not the first but around the first week.
I joined a server with small teams, joined kharaa and spawned in a 3 hive 100+ onos ready enviroment.
I bet I was one of the newbies actually seeying and using a onos within the first month.

hehe, my first game of NS was on release night.
first map I played on was Eclipse.
this compleatly messed me up every other time I have played eclipse b/c our comm had relocated to Triad

on the subject of long games. my freshmen year of high school, so a little more than 2 years ago. i'd say 2 and a month or so, about a month after NS came out.. i was playing NS.
I had came home, finished my homework (I never did this, but I did it so I could play NS) and started playing NS at around 9:00 P.M., since I got a bit of a nap during teh day and after school, I wasnt tired.
It was a map that resembled tanith, I think it was, the name escapes me. Anyways, the game went on until 11. My parents told me to go to bed, they left. about 1, my brother got home and told me to go to bed. about 3 in the morning, i was starting to get tired. I took a 3 hour nap, and played for an hour that morning.
To my suprise, school was cancelled half way in because of snow. I get home, play 4 more hours on the SAME round, and finish the game. Somehow, the aliens won by sneak attacking certain bases with bilebomb. They lost the bilebomb once and actually took out a TF with just spit, 4 gorges+spit+TF = game.
For me, it all started when some TFC clanmates recommended that we try out NS. At first, I installed the client and read the manual (yes, I RTFM when I can) and then loaded up some maps, just to see what they looked like. As I didn't know how scary (or not) the aliens would be, I slowly crept through the maps, constantly worrying about something jumping out of the dark. Talk about atmosphere.
My first game in version 1.03 was on ns_bast, before it was seriously deformed (just kidding), and thankfully I had some teammates on the Marine team that knew what to do. Needless to say, we won that round, and the teamwork was pretty damned good if I can recall correctly. For the next 4-5 hours I played on to become more familiar with NS, and was subsequently hooked.
And remember... "Feel the love ... gorge love."
Faithly following the user manual, I joined an ns_eclipse server. It was NS 1.02 at the time I believe. Ignoring the recommendation to go marines, I went aliens instead. I was a skulk and just start wondering around being terribly lost. Little did I know I kept ending up back at maintenance and trying to go through those fake doors. Then I had enough res to go Onos. Once I did I kept trying to go through hallways but there were WOLs everywhere. My first encounter with the enemy as an Onos -- I died instantly, not knowing how to play at all. Fun times.
I was addicted for two years. I played all of my games on the now dead [NAR] servers. It sure was fun because it was my favorite game ever. I don't know what element it had, but I never got tired of it. My parents were angered by my obsession with it, but I still managed to get a 4.0 GPA despite putting off my homework for homeroom the day it was due.
Unfortunately, I have no will to play anymore because of Half-Life 2. Perhaps once there is a port, I will once again participate, but as for now, I cannot stand the outdated feeling it has.
I remember pressing enter on the armslab for an hour because it said upgrade on it and showed the gun, and I would run around shooting things to see if it got upgraded. Then I would run up to other buildings and presss enter all over them and things would pop out sometimes (Didn't know about the commander) and I had no idea what I did to make equipment pop out. Then I ran around the map and found some OC's and my teammate told me to shoot at the red ball it dies faster. I also remember the days when I or even my team would be afriad when the other team got a onos, now its just a joke, I rather fight 2 onos with a pistol then one good fade.
Well it was the day after Halloween or release and I just joined NS_Nancy and Marines were turret farmed outside our last hive and we had a wall of OCs at the entrance to our hive. Some one told a gorge to put up more chambers well I managed to learn how to change to gorge and poeple said to switch back we had to many gorges I ask why and learned..............well the marines came in and raped us with Heavy and next round began and it took 6 hours as aliens but we won and I learn how to play aliens in that one 6 hour game. Old school NS is the best and I personally think gameplay has gone downhill and it has gotten worse and stupid. I miss all the skills phermones, paralzye, babblers, and the other that I forget... I started pubing at the 3am server. That's where I met Ricey and Solace two great gamers. I was a really great comm back in 1.00-1.04 and never lost once infact Ricey I gave him that name because he had a stupid name and over mic I kept calling him Ricey.
Anyways 2.0 came out and I thought cool I bet it gonna be great but 2.0 was worse and games seemed worse I still commed but only like once a week instead of everyday. I stopped playing after 2 months of 2.0 I hated 2.0 and got sick of it. Some poeple told me that it was the playtester faults so when one came on a server I cursed at them till enough told me that they had no say it how NS got developed only FLayra. Luckliy Flayra came to a pub server I was at and I noticed the icon. I told him to bring back 1.0 gameplay and get lerk bite back. He only ackowledged my opionon. Only other thing I hated about 2.0 was the playtester icons and veterans icons when they joined the server they were some cocky batsards. I rdmeber once hearing them talk how good they were and how we lost and were noobs and me and my friend rushed there comm chair took it out and they never built another in time, the veteran comm paniced after 5 mins they lost GG us. They left the server right after they lost. Personally I think only icons should be constelltation or dev because vets and playtester are cocky ****....
After that I stopped playing 2.0.....only took 2 months. I recently tried beta5 and it makes me so mad how NS turned out.
But those first few 1.00-104 were the best and I will thank you for those Flayra and dev team.
I remember the first night, everyone with 1000 ping (but not lagging--just high ping), turreting up every RT on the map, onos dying to LMGers, etc. It was hilarious, fun, and definately got me hooked, as I'm still playing today. I miss things such as Enhanced Hive Sight, auto-aiming sieges, crouching marines being invincible, cloaking making noises, exploiting "stopcommandermode" in the RR and shooting at everyone, and a lot of other things. I miss the old Maintenance hive on ns_eclipse; the old Freight Elevator Access on caged (the "true" double-node for you new people), relocations to EM Drill Shaft/the cockpit actually working (mines with trip-lasers), and a lot of other things.
1- Climbing up walls is a great thing for a FPS. Imagine the CS terrorists doing that.... 2- Half-Life could actually combine a RTS with a FPS and not f**k up. In fact, provide the perfect combination for a future genre of games. 3- The skill required to carefully cloak into an enemy base and sit there for 10 minutes laughing. 4- That Steam doesn't just have **** CS. In fact,it has a lotta ideas. 5- Skulk focus and marine jetpack is god. 6- How to have a sense of humour in a game. My god,NS is the only game with a sense of humour.
Oh the good old days I miss them I joined in 1.04 first map Bast second map eclipse funny I loved aleins and now im more marine favored probly cause I can shoot better than bite.
In the old days Onos meant GG and it meant somthing to kill a onos. no days a onos is just a big skulk that can eat marines. good old 1.04 GLs so lub lol so fast reload.
1 gorg a hive plug in 2 hive fades = GG lol 2 hives back then was GG marines won if they had to hives or they lost.
I've only been playing since 3.0 beta4a, though I definitly will see about participating in one of those 1.04 weekends...see how the game began
A friend introduced me to the game, and took me onto a deserted server with a few bots to try to learn it. I had no clue what i was doing, and before i really did, he had to go. So, after exiting and rereading the manual, I decided to try a few CO maps, to learn how the game played. Tryed a few NS maps as well, but i didn't really get it at the time, and no one was really working together. So i stuck with CO, and found a few good servers to play on. It was immersive, addicting, and just great fun to play. But i knew there was something more i was missing.
Then, one day, on the 3am server, map changed to Eclipse, and Syrus hopped in the comm chair. It was beauty...everyone was working together, a team of comrades, working for a common goal, under the capable command of a great leader. I loved it. The way this game can take a group of isolated individuals, and instantly make them a team is something that no other has ever accomplished. Sure you still have your rambo's and your bad games. But when you have one of those good games...with balanced teams, players, who while maybe not always the best shots, know how to play, and a solid understanding of the gameflow, it's enough to restore your faith in NS. I guess i'm one of the CO success stories, as well. By learning the basics from CO, I was more able to truly appreciate the depths of play only possible in NS maps, and once I had a few good games with Syrus in the chair, I was convinced they were far superior. Thank you Syrus, and all of 3am for providing me hours of the best NS experiences i've had.
