Can I Use The Ns .wads

Hi boys, and hi girls, im sure there are some of ya out there (Girls i mean). Hey im doing a map, but due to school it will take a looong time, any way, right now im using the .wad's fom other mods and ns, i supose this is ok, no? I mean i defently dont have time to make all textures my self. Not that i wouldnt be able to do it, im doing the art line. But time is my enemy. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> So i just ask my self, do you think that the artists mind if i use thier wads, well thier textures, and one last question, eh can i later create my own wad so i can add up all the textures used in my map, if any mapper that has done textures for any of the NS, or TS maps, plz advice me and i will give u credit in my map, or if u like it more remove ur textures from my map.

    It was said somewhere that you can use the NS wads in your own NS maps, but only for NS maps. As far as other maps / wads you'd want to get permission by e-mailing them, not asking on a forum. I'm not quite sure what you're 'one last question' is but you can make your own wads for NS, though you shouldn't bother putting any other textures that an included with NS in there, that's just a waste of space.

    OK thank you, should, but i must be able to use the other HL wads, right, like the glass and all that stuff, right? Any way, thanks for yor help.

    They say you can use any of the HL wads you want, so long as they come with the game. No TFC, CS, DoD, whatever wads then, of course, and it's probably best to just stick with the main HL wad if you want to use HL textures.

    Yeah, you can use ANY of the textures from the official maps, so long as it is only for NS purposes. Of course you can use the original HL textures (like hl.wad, water.wad, xeno.wad). Textures from other sources can be a bit more tricky, as the artist needs to give specific permission for public use.

    Well, yes, of course you can use hl.wad. It would be almost impossible to make a map without it, since hl.wad includes important key textures such as clip, aaatrigger, and sky.

    For wads from any other hl mod, though, such as CS or TFC or whatnot, you better ask the author of the textures.

    I would say you can use the TFC wads because TFC comes with half life (Mine did).

    I don't think any of the TFC textures would look right in an NS map

    actualy from my C4Software Experience I know that you can legaly Use ANY content from HL REtail mods because it's part of HL and HL is open for modding... Course It's back practice And i'll kill anyone who uses CS gun models.

    I do believe that the NS team owns the rights to all textures within NS and will pursue the use of them for non-NS maps at this stage. At least, I know of a few people who have been rather sternly told to not use the NS textures in non-NS maps.

    In short reply, you cannot, the developers own all rights to the textures, and no one is allowed to use them for anything other then NS related mapping.

    Right, and since the NS crew feels that way, it's <i>reasonable to assume</i> that the makers of other mods feel the same way about THEIR textures. They want to keep it in <i>their mod only,</i> to retain their own unique look and feel.

    And please, don't speculate about "such and such mod probably doesn't mind, I think." If you know for certian that a company declared their mod's textures usable, post a link to the press release. If you can't do that, keep your mouth shut and stop spreading rumors.

    I can confirm that any retail content from HL, Op4, BS, CS, and Gunman is available for other mod use, though. I remember reading the press release myself a while back.

    Personally, I consider KFS a reputable source in and of himself. That said, none of the textures from those sets would fit the theme, so don't even bother.

    This was recently discussed on the valve-ERC forums, and drew the exact same conclusion as KFS (With proof).
