Ms3d/3ds Question

I use 3Ds MAX and MS3D on a friend's pc, and I know how to get a Natural Selection (Half-Life) model into 3Ds, but I can't figure out how to get the skeleton into 3Ds, to move models around. His copy of 3Ds does have character studio, so it is possible. Can someone explain how to do this?

The bone structure dosent export in a 3ds file, when you export in 3ds its more of a shell you get then a actual "mesh", so you have to pose in MS3D and then export into 3ds

Decompile the models through Ms3d, import the reference .smd, pose, export to .3ds, voila.

This is the method I use and I usually run both 3ds and ms3d at the same time and alt+tab between the two.

SUCCESS! My first NS rendered pic. I have a 1024x768 version but this one is easier to look at:

Edit: marine was glossy, so I lowered the specularity or the marine and re-attached the picture.

Well there's gmax, made by discreet, and you could ask someone to send you the models in 3ds format.

for those of you who are interested, an easy way to make models look alot nicer in max renders is to add a specularity and bumpmap channel to the image. i did this on alot of our renders, and on the trailer. easiest way to go about it is to take the skin, reduce it to greyscale, adjust the brightness/contrast so you get lots of bright and dark areas, then save as a new bmp. stick it into both the spec and bump map slots in the material editor, and badabing, instant sweetness. some things to keep in mind: areas like skin dont usually shine, so you can make that part of the spec map black.

hmmm never thought about that before, thanks for the idea

btw: I dont think your able to "render" in Gmax, more of just a modeling prog

go to select -> joints and select the joints, or u can goto the joitns tab and just click them =/ it works better. Remember just rotate the joins (bones) instead of moving the or ur guy will get **obscenity** up
