Decline In The Quality Of Ns Players?

aeroripperaeroripper Join Date: 2005-02-25 Member: 42471NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation
It seems whenever i join a public server playing NS maps its always the same scenario. There is a whiny commander who yells at his team because their stupid and can't get this res node, or don't know what to do etc (since it seems a lot of comms don't hand out waypoints as often as they should and just assume everybody knows where to go and what to do).

I really don't see how its fair that the team gets blamed incessiantly because they failed and just doesn't make the game fun at all. I've come out of NS just feeling very **** off and mad at these people in the game that whine and bit** the whole time about how bad their team is and it just ruins the whole fun of the game.

This really isn't a suggestion just venting.... anybody else think so?

play combat until you can kill skulks with a reasonable amount of ammo, then join a clan.

The only thing i dislike about co is that it seems to have attracted a lot of CS players. With just NS usually they would never play long enough to annoy people.

I still suck at NS as a whole, but this is because I'm a cautious defensive player. I know the strategy of the game (from start, grab res....or hive)
I've switched from being a marine to being a skulk cloaker.
Point is,you don't necessarily have to have a fully good pwnage team to enjoy NS. Sometimes when sum1 makes a mistake,it adds tension to the game; can the mistake be repaired or will the other team seize the advantage?
So don't whine about the 'newbies'; you will make mistakes too, like DYING at a critical point.
    So learn to <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> ,learn to <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif' /><!--endemo--> and learn to have fun defending <!--emo&::hive::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/hive5.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='hive5.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

Well consider this, 5 people, all know where to go and what to do, comm gives 2 of them shotties, gives a waypoint to double res, yeat 2 of the lmgers wander somewhere, rest 3 continiue to their waypoint, when they get there, what they see, 2 Gorges and a res tower and few OCs and a skulk, what they do?they blast the OC out of its misery, then try the RT, 1 of the shotty guys doesn't shoot at it though for obivius reasons(his covering the other 2 guys), well a skulk comes, and he comes out loud, and murders all the 3 marines, quess why?the 3rd marine was to busy blasting at a gorge instead of the skulk that was right in his field of vision, now repeat that scenario x1000, and you get one whiny comm.

The reason commanders do not give waypoints as "much as they should" is because they block aiming path's for the marines and obstruct their view. Hince why a commander tries not to use them, but will if needed. The general basis of players hasnt changed since I left... I'm not sure what thats about, I left about 4-5 months ago and it was still somewhat like this. The players all depend on the server/time and such... its always a changing game experience tbh.

Ah, I remember that liddle old "/delwp" thing. No excuse for Commanders putting down too few waypoints, you should always know where you're going. No one said commanding was easy.

I wouldn't say it is a decline in quality of NS players, possibly NS Commanders, but the really good Commanders are few and far between, and always have been as far as I remember.
  • theclamtheclam Join Date: 2004-08-01 Member: 30290Members
I would say that small communities will have better players because more people know each other, play with each other, and know the game. Large communities have a large number of players who play casually (newbies).

So, we have a choice. We can accept an influx of newbies OR we can let NS stagnate and eventually die.

I do agree that the quality of the players lately has gone down--but, that's because a lot of older players (from 1.0, 1.01, etc) are leaving, and more new people are coming in. Give it a few months and things should probably be a bit better.

I think its because of the new releases the learning curve has gone down. and thus the over all gaming quality has gone down. the community use to be a lot smaller back in the older versions cuz it was hard as heck ot win. but the players that stuck around to figure it out were awesome.

I don't think the skill level has declined much, it's just that there is a grip of new players that water down the overall skill level.

But no fear, with the proper guidance they will turn into smurfing cyclones of death that get hackuzed all the time <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

you know what it is?, well i've been playing since early 1.01, and i've always enjoyed ns cause everyone was serious about the game they where playing, and because of that you learned a lot of strategies and you became a better player. but nowadays people just join ns maps without having any ns skills, cause the only skills they have are pulling the trigger just like in co maps.they are arrogant cause they rule in co maps, but seriously everybody can dominate in a co map. but now they join ns maps, and they suck. because of them my skills drop aswell, and because you cannot play a normal game anymore, you know from the start 50% of your team is goin to drop out of the server when we're not on the winning hand. they do not listen to the comm and have no teamplay feeling at all....

man i wish we had 1.04 again:(
  • zariuszer0zariuszer0 Join Date: 2004-09-21 Member: 31848Members
Well, the problem is that for every new player who comes to the game with the right attitude, three or four with the wrong come too. I know I for one am a relatively new player. Started 3.0 b4a. But I grew in skill level, and while still not anywhere near the skill of the best players, I can hold my own, and don't whine when things go badly. But the problem is that so few other of the new players see it that way. They're used to winning at their game of choice, and if they're not instantly winning at this, then it's the "game's fault" or their "teammates's fault", but never their own. They don't understand that it's a new game, with new ideas. So they whine about it, and frustrate other players.

We havent all left yet... ive been playing since 1.02 when good old siege cannons where a marines best friend oh those poor gorges.

Anyway i would suggest trying a diffrent server then the one you are currently playing on. I had alot of fun in the early days on NTFM and Warservers not because of the game itself but the community thier. Sadly NTFM had to cancel thier NS server due to lack of intrest though playzen quite kindly now host a NWN server for us. Im unsure about Warservers i know they had server problems and lost a huge chunk of thier player base though im not sure if they are still around.

Thier are still a few quality servers around that cater for us that want a serious game i would suggest the YO clan server as one they have both a CO and NS server that are normally full till late. They even host a regs night and have quite strict rules F4ing is a warning then ban.

Combat has attracted a large number of CS players, who, by stereotype, are hyper ADHD 12-year-olds. They believe that combat is much better than classic because it's more like the twitchyness they prefer in CS. Whenever a real game of NS comes along, they all vote for another combat, or just go off and rambo, and never join aliens. This really frustrates the older players, to the point where they leave the game.
    [/RANT]

Now, that was very stereotypical, and I'm not saying most 12-year-olds are hyper ADHD CS addicts, but, IME, most hyper ADHD CS addicts are 12-year-olds.

No offense to anyone, but that's what's happening.

    I offer this as an example: <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=85442&view=findpost&p=1388484' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....dpost&p=1388484</a>

One thing that dissapoints me about the ns community nowadays is, back in old versions, i rarely found a hacker or anything, but then i think its alot more common now, for instance...http://www.mpcforum.com/archive/index.php/f-70.html I especially found #31 to be quite funny. A simple NS Forum is just filled every single thread: help my hax are broken, now i cant get a kill; help me people. I think this definitely declines the quality or people that have to depend on programs to have fun. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hacking is quite common now, and its sad. Just tonight a speed hacker was busted on my favorite server, it was pretty funny. He was speedhacking as lerk, and sporing at warp speed near a movement.

Us: Dude, turn off your hacks.
Him: Me? Im not hacking! *poof poof poof poof poof*
    Us: Explain that then.
Him: Explain what? *poof poof poof poof poof*

It was so blatantly obvious he was hacking, with rines and aliens both watching him. He was kicked in under 2 minutes, then came back asking why he was kicked (while still hacking of course) and was then banned.

    Nubbie down
