When i play Ns this happens, about every 30 mins. Gets kinda anoying cause it crashes ns, then i have to end-task hl.exe, then start ns again with out any skill points.

that is an error with our network some where (probably)
Upon loss of connnection hl and your computer will still think their is a connection and so rather than HL saying connection problem in top right itl report bad packet like it thinks it recived a 0 byte packet or is trying to send packets on a connection it belives is open but fails..
This also happens to me whenever my ISP suddenly decides to do some work somewhere.
don't play games on a wireless network, plug in dirrectly.
It occurs in all online games in one form or another.
In some games (HL/2) you may notice the off hook light go out and then resume after a approx amount of time.
Uninstalling QoS schedular in network properties may eliminate the problem. For me it just meant i didnt crash back to desktop with that error. Which of course made the game far more playable however my connection still drops, it just resumes afterwards.
Others games will have the same symptoms...WC3 and even Quake 2.
If uninstalling QoS doesnt fix it, there is nothing that can be done.
What you are talking about only happens to people on Dailup.
QoSPktSched will create massive amounts of choke if you are on dail up (and will only do anytihng if you are on dialup) as what it does is regulate pkts being sent/recieved.
some how this is good for regular net browsing (I think it makes sure that each pkt has as much info in it as possible before sending it), but basicaly creates a bottleneck for gaming.
Im on dial up and have had this problem ever since i installed winxp, thats 4 years ago.
On 56k

Self Quote FTW!
go into network settings and disable QoSpacketschedular
Also anyone who "dails" up their broadband connection may also find disabling this useful as well.
(at least my MSN voice conversations are no longer ridiculusly laggy)
Its not unique to NS.. happens in CS allt he time..
i would recommend mentioning it (or mentioning it more) on the steam forums.
Doubt Valve will do anything with the halflife engine any more though.
