Ok, so I'm trying to finish this map and aside from the previous shots (that you can find on my site) I've worked on this:

Nice, but that room looks huge.

If I'm honest, it's huge and bland. Needs more of the contrast shown by those monitors in the final image.

The 'misc' monitor does not look as though it is giving off light where as it should, could give some much needed contrast and the majority of the walls are just flat and quite boring.

I do however like how the floor goes down to those monitors, that lovely little nano tech texture too.

Needs tweaking (a lot) but what the hell...

nice nice, I like that last shot. Some darker lighting would be sweet, with maybe a moving spot light or something, panning for intruding scumbags

I think the green should be toned down to a greyish-darker green (use the 'colour' knob on your monitor to find out what I mean).

I too like the steps that lead down to the monitors, don't you dare touch that feature.

P.S. Nice work, Juanjo

I hope you are going to tweak that over stretched wall texture nearer the ground?

There is no need to touch that green/blue night sky though. For me that is what gives the area its "je ne ce quoi" (I believe that is how it is spelt, doubt it is though).

Can we please try and not take jabs at other members when they are not asking for it. Thaldarin expressed absolutely no negative sentiment. If another member's view of how your map should be does not match up to your ideal (speaking to everyone here who needs to understand this) then simply say "No, I won't be doing that" and preferably express why you won't do that. Remember - YOU ARE RIGHT (Unless you agree with the statement, in which case you are both right). Do not revel in it, just simply accept it. It is not an excuse to express negativity to other people when their ideas are not in the same wavelength as yours.

I'm getting fed up with this immature tension/defensiveness from some members on this board. If you don't like a map, this does not mean that you have the authority to s**t over it. Likewise, if you don't like a member who is posting in your thread, then TOUGH. So long as they are not deliberately trying to irk you, there should have absolutely no excuse to behave in the way Mendasp has; no matter the relationship between you. Even if someone is deliberately trying to annoy you, it is very easy to ignore it and give a mature reply. I know it is tempting to unleash the demon of retaliation inside you, but doing so in a controlled and unabusive way (unless absolutely called for) has so many more positive results, for everyone, than just attacking the user for the sake of letting them know their opinion is not welcome - whether you get a kick out of it or not.

Remember, other people besides you are reading these posts. Having to put up with the negative posts all the time is just so very tiresome, and is not productive or advancing the situation in the slightest.

An alternate and much more productive and informative reply to Thaldarin's comment could be something like this:

"That texture is deliberately sized up because a) It is only ever going to be viewed from a certain distance away, b) some textures can look completely different or give off a different feel when scaled up/down, and I happened to think the section of this texture works well in that position, and c) Scaled up textures generally reduce r_speeds, and this is part of the reason for the scale of the texture."

Now, that reply has given three different reasons for its inclusion, three different pieces of information that other members can read and then consider applying in their own maps. Whether or not they are all relevent in this situation is not the point, it is positive information none the less.

We don't want to be expanding our range of insults on this forum, we want to be expanding our mapping knowledge.

When will this be realised, and applied?

<edit>
Treat all comments as suggestions, however they are phrased. The only exception is if the comment points out a valid flaw which affects the gameplay of the level. From a design point of view, your own opinion matters most because only you really know what it is you are trying to achieve.

<edit 2>
I'm sorry to have posted this in your thread specifically, Mendasp - but that comment was the straw which broke this camels back.

Man if I could sig that post I would.
That is a post and a half. some people on this forum should take note of that.

mendasp: Its only one area ive seen so far, so im not gonna say anything about it being too big, plus its not like the whole map is open.
I think the lighting is very bland, not enough varition. also its very bright.
also if you cam(actually you should) try stray from the ns2.wad a bit. its REALLY grey.
and yes i also like the nano tech texture _

I just don't want thursday to post in my threads, that's it. I wasn't telling him to get out of my thread for pointing out that the textures in the terrain are stretched (in fact, I wasn't arguing about that)... I just don't want him in my threads, I think it's pretty simple.

As for the lighting in the first pic, well, I know it's bland, but the brightness is intentional (specially after all the "OMGZ I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING!!!1111" comments about my other maps).

And if anyone hasn't seen the other pics:

Another WIP (first compile, so lighting is terrible). Just showing the stairs+node / glass stuff (the rest of the room will probably change).

I'm liking the style of the room, especially the res node raised and highlighted as an altar of technological worship. Or something.

Honestly, to me it looks really cheesey. It looks like a classic example of when someone can't think of something realistic to put in a spot so they make something that is purely geometric. I'm really not a fan of the light strips or the concentric stairs.

Seriously, if I knew nothing about you, and I was shown these two maps, there's no way I'd think that they were made by the same guy. Bast has a real feel to it; this just looks....sterile. The only really nice looking thing that I've seen is that res node on top of the glass floor. I don't know, maybe I'll like the hive areas better....

Those textures are very nice, though. It's just the architecture and lighting that are uninspired.

This is what I get for not releasing my maps. Bast's ownership is a long and convulted story. Needless to say, the style of Bast is not Mendasp's nor the other mappers that restored it to its former glory (and beyond).

Well, I'm not making a realistic map But I admit most of my creations start with something stupid like a wall that I think will look cool (in this case it was the stairs). So far it has worked

Anyways, as for the other comments. It's a work in progress and it's a really early WIP for that matter, I was just showing the concept.

Also, that ArtbyFeng concept was used in the first sava (public, I'm sure you can still download it somewhere), I just reused it here, heh.

And Bast is not mine, and I've never said it was mine. Long story short: Original author (Relic25) left and the source was lost, bast had a lot of entities (this means it lagged like crazy), it was removed, I started a remake team, it was remade, everyone happy, revolving door deleted + horrible changes, everyone angry, solved some issues, people still want that door. THE END.

On the first two screens you have appeared to used two different textures on the walls beneath the glass. Looks slightly out of place, I'd stick with the texture used nearer the resource node.

Last screenshot, the blue light spot on the wall looks odd.

There's something wrong with that reflection (it doesn't match with the surrounding walls), but that must be part of the reason it's still called WIP. Outdoors area looks nice, but looks plain and lacks life. It must be the finely cut grass that makes me so demanding. Making the area less bright and making it rain/thunder would do it, though. I like your style. Geometry so inspired and clean makes me want to comm in it.

You need to do something about that pipe in the floor mendasp, it looks really bizzare. I think it's got to do with the emptyness of the box, and that horrible metal floor texture on the bottom of it doesn't help either. Keep trying though, it will get better.
