Gimme a break, I like the show. So what? My Geography teacher still like Bugs Bunny. It's a fun show to watch. There's some nice thrills, good music tracks, smart strategies, and the effects and simply awesome. And in Japan, it probably isn't a kids' show. Just like Pokemon wasn't a kids' comic, originally.
Bugs Bunny and other Warner Bros. cartoons were actually never meant for children. When they came out they were considered very vulgar. A lot of the older ones were actually quite racist too. (See Bugs Bunny doing an impression of a Japanese soldier during post-ww2 cartoons to see what I mean).
I like any cartoon, it's just that anime has more structure than any other cartoon and I like that. There's always a really deep plot that's revealed over time, if it's not hentai.
Number one reason people don't like Anime (from my experience) is that it's child-oriented. Don't blame anime, blame the damn american sensorhip. Sailor Moon for example, I happened to catch an episode my Sister was watching and "Bunny" used the phrase "Pumpkin Head." Originally she was calling the guy a **obscenity**. Between this and cutting out scenes and such- it's hard to watch and enjoy American dubbed Anime. However, if you rent some good wholesome uncensored stuff like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust... well it's quite enjoyable.
However, the #1 thing I hate on this issue is for people to call the whole lot of it stupid. That's like calling books or movies stupid. Anime is just a style/form to express a story. It can be commical, serious, dramatic, action oriented, or pornigraphic. Same as something written or filmed. So stop generalizing!
I have seen LOTS of anime, both Americanized and completely uncensored and every one I've seen can be described by one or more of those adjectives.
I've seen:
X Vampire Hunter D Vampire Hunter D the new one that has a name I can't remember Ninja Scroll Akira Ghost in The Shell Dragon Ball Z a plenty Trigun
Just to name a few, I'm not saying that they all sucked(Trigun was pretty funny, Vampire Hunter D the new one that has a name I can't rememeber had beautiful art work...) I am just saying that I don't see why it's SO big and it's basically taking over America. No original cartoons ever come on anymore, it's either a popular anime show or an American show trying to look anime. Anime's are to cartoons as fiction is to a bookstore, I could say I don't like fiction and still enjoy reading books.
cartoons with progressive plotlines my ARSE, the only cartoon that ever did that was the disney show 'gargoyles', which for the most part had some good writers for it.
and trying to compare one 'cartoon' to another like that, is like comparing the Simpsons to Hamtaro (omfg, like the most cheesy piece of crap ever).

OK, I think many of you already know I'm a rabid anime fan, and like most other catroonstyles, too (Gargoyles first season was amazing).
Now, as others already said, Animes are just another form of media. In terms of statisics, that means that at least 90% of it is pure crap. If you take a look through your mainstream broadcasting stations, no matter where you live, you'll surely ask yourself why the hell this stuff is so popular, and if you're not extremely lucky, you will even ask yourself the same question when watching the stuff many of us nuts consider 'top notch'. That's the rule of commerce, and everyone tends to be fooled by it from time to time.
Aside from that, however, I see some of the best progressive filmmaking in Anime. Period. Show me the actor movie that could've maintained the intensitivity of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Show me the twelve episodes series that's got as much depth as Serial Experiments LAIN. Show me the movies that had as much influence on their genres as Ghost in the Shell or Akira (although both are sorry excuses for the relative Mangas).
Yes, big amounts of Anime can only be described by words that aren't allowed on these boards. I'm in for the rest.
There is *alot* of bad stuff out there. But when I finally finished watching Cowboy Bebop through to the end I was dumbfounded at the sheer awesomeness I had just witnessed.
