Just messin around on ns_bhop
Was practicing my hop (really, this map is extreamly helpfull to those in need) on ns_bhop and decided to do some speed comparisons. With cl_showspeed 1 on, these are the average speeds of the different classes:

CODE

Please note these are the average speeds that I got while I was bhopping, yours may be slightly different.
Lerk is flight speeds
Skulk extra: Leap
Fade extra: Blink
Onos extra: Charge.

The fastest unit in the game? The skulk when it celerity leaps. Surprisingly an onos can bhop as fast as a normal skulk if it has celerity.
I didnt take bhop for the fade because I figured it would be pretty useless info (no one does it) *note: this is bhoping without the use of blinking. It is actually very usefull to add an additional "jump" at the end of a blink to retain most of your velocity.*although it is possible and I got speeds around 400 when I did it for a short spell.

Informtation extracted from below:
Max bhop speed is 1.7 x (base speed).
ns_bhop can be found at www.nslearn.org

Ill edit this post with some marine info as well, and add some more requested data.

Hey there, need to give credit where credit is due: Nicely Formated W/SS. Alot more info, looks like someone beat me to it.

-edit-
Yes I realise I misspelled kharaa.

80% increase in speed if you bunny hop.

    Cute.

Fade bunnyhoping is far from useless. It saves energy and is a more efficient way of 'closing the gap'
Anyways, nice little study you did there, some screenshots would've been nice.

Now that's useful analysis. Nice work.

Ye this really si great, funyn no one hasn`t done this yet. You should still add that fade bhop - it is quite useful in certain situations(cough PoD cough)

Ahhh...where can I get ns_bhop? j/w, cause my bhop usually maxes at like 1.4-1.5x my normal speed.

U sure lerk doesnt fly faster with cele than skulk with leap? And alotta ppl bhop with fade just b/c of reasons stated. It was a nice analysis ima use this to my advantage later .

I find fade bhop quite useful from time to time, if you blink then bounce you can keep up a quite decent speed and at the same time save energy. The onos bhop I find a bit rediculess, but it's useful like hell to escape as the marines can't keep up even without celerity.

This would be nice to include in the manual, along with marine speeds too.

No, the speed cap only comes into effect when you touch the ground (it slows you down to 1.7 x base speed). A leaping skulk not touching any walls or ground could still achieve a higher speed. There's a cap for airspeed as well, but I dont know what it is.

I thought that air speed was capped to 3x maxspeed, but tests tend to prove otherwise. I think you can test it on your listenserver by setting sv_friction to 0. You shouldn't be slowed down to 1.7x maxspeed.

Edit: And yes, it would be nice to unlock cl_showspeed to make it available when sv_cheats is off. It could be improved too (moved a bit further down on the hud, could look a bit like the speed-o-meter like in Science & Industry or sparky tools as well).

Edit 2: I made a small quick little page with basic information (from my humble observations) about the different aliens and marines class speeds, with a couple of screenshots : X

The command 'cl_showspeed' should be unlocked IMO.

I second the motion to take cl_showspeed, convert it to meters, and apply it as a speedometer. Or just unlock it.

I also think it would be a good idea to unlock cl_showspeed. I'm going to have to download that map later and try it out.

I will be editing the topic with new info when I get time. Ill try to grab some screens for you too, but that is dependent on me resizing and not being lazy with an image host.

Horizontal airspeed is capped at 3*base speed. Vertical airspeed is capped at sv_maxvelocity (2000) and sv_maxspeed (4000), and speed on the ground is capped at sv_maxvelocity.

Lerk airspeed is now capped at 1000 up and 1200 down I believe from the changelog, but most of the time you never hit it unless you are pancaking on metal or something.

The vertical airspeed is not actually capped at those values, but any wing flap that would exceed them is ignored (or something like that; I don't know exactly how it works). That is to say, you can still reach 2000 speed by falling or gliding downward.
  • MrGunnerMrGunner Join Date: 2003-01-03 Member: 11757Members, Constellation
Yeah I wasn't sure of that as I've never tried it. I don't really notice that much difference in speed from b5 so it's not really any big deal.

What do you mean? They are attainable any time you just can't see it because cl_showspeed only works when sv_cheats is on.

Onos bunnyhopping would be useful if the vast majority of doors weren't too small to accomodate it.

Duck while you bhop, the ducking onos playerhull is the same size as a standing fade. Some passages are still to tight, but the majority have enough space. Also ducking onos/fades don't make any sound when they are bhopping.

The limit on horizontal airspeed is the maximum horizontal speed (cl_showspeed's "ground speed") of lerk flight, fade blink, skulk leap, and the jetpack. The limit on horizontal speed is determined with the use of a vertically large map (many "fun" maps can come in useful). The limit on speed on the ground is determined by setting friction to 0 or a negative. Knowledge of this last number, however, is entirely worthless; friction always provides a much lower practical limit.
