Hi there,

I know this really doesnt relate to NS that much but seeing as you guys know alot more about computers than me, could you help me with this problem:

Ive recently been getting this message everytime i start my pc

Starting in BIOS failsafe mode. Please check CMOS BIOS SETUP
press F1 to continue - then it loads up as normal

but the problem is i dont know what CMOS BIO SETUP is and i dont know whats causing it.

Any suggestions to what this means and if so does anyone know if it will affect me in the long term?

The BIOS is a basic set of instructions telling your PC how to communicate with the parts in it and how to bootup.

Sounds like your BIOS settings have become messed up at some point. Could of been a power cut while booting/unsafe shutdown or any number of other reasons such as installing new hardware

If its an award BIOS press DEL/DELETE as its booting up to access it. Depending on the board make and the bios it supports the buttons can vary.

Thier should be an option to load default options and one for optimized/optimal settings. Default are generally safer and more stable while optimal gives better performance. Load one then save and exit.

A word of warning changing things your not supposed to in the BIOS can cause all sorts of problems on bootup and even damage hardware. If your not happy using it i suggest getting someone down that has abit of knowledge about it.

If anyone else can think of anything better feel free to post any comments.

Biggest cause of CMOS/BIOS reset are checksum errors, and a flat CR2032 battery.
Load up the BIOS, and pick "Default Settings", then press "Save And Exit"/"Exit Saving Changes". Then see if the problem goes away.

If you want suggested BIOS settings, then try post on

Yep, and I got an A in them too. And it helps that I've been an engineer for the last 3 years. I actually got the job before I passed my A2 exams. Working part-time until I finished all of them, of course.
