What happen?
Wasn't it supposed to be played when 3.0 came out? As I recall, there are 6 perfectly good radeon 9800s out there just waiting to be had.
When it was scheduled, that was THE Video card to get. Now everyone and their dog has one (Including myself) Heck this was scheduled over a year ago and haven't seen anything since. I think its safe to say its not happening.

Last I heard, we've still got the cards unopened somewhere. Considering that ATI gave them to us with a tournament or competition in mind, I'd assume we're somehow contractually bound to give them away to the winner(s) of some sort of competition. 3.1 tourney? NS:Source tourney? Mapmaking competition? Machinima competition? Get-everyone-in-your-neighborhood-to-dress-up-as-gorges-and-post-a-video competition? I don't think anyone knows what'll happen -- but the plan has always been to give them to worthy members of the community somehow.

Well that was a bad idea not to have the tourney, ati's not going to be happy and host other tourneys

It's nearly impossible to organize a worldwide tourney anyway. Too much large to organize, many issues coming from distances (time, ping), and who would organize that... Maybe you could give, say, 2 card to next season's major US league, australia league and european league? That way, the world is covered, and you are sure the tournaments will be organized right (CAL seems perfect from here, and I heard there's a nice euro league project coming soon :p). Plus, giving 6 "old" cards to a 8 players team would probably make some of them useless and ebay-ables. Giving 2 cards would fit most of the needs. Of course those leagues would stick an ATI logo somewhere on their page.

I've been approached by several people "interested" in hosting such a tourney, I've asked them for a complete plan which I can take back to the dev team to discuss..
So far tbh, people can't solve the "It should be international" element yet. North Americans playing on euro servers are at a disadvantage, Euro's playing on asian servers are at a disadvantage, and everyone playing on Aussie servers are at a disadvantage (Aussies included ). This is the single largest stumbling block that people have had when they have approached me about this issue. And frankly having it be a NA/Euro/Aussie only tourney was not the original goal and isn't really an option.
There are still a few "teams" of people investigating different options but it really has stalled out over this one factor.
Now if only I could convince my wife to let me use the basement of our house and get everyone to come to Canada... The problem would be solved!!!
There are only solutions to the region issue that I can think of:

Host more than one tourney (ftw)

Play the match on X's home ground but cripple their ping to match Y's. (:\)

--
I vote we go down a different route and give them away to active members of the community. Go go FFT clan etc.
Well Zunni NA vs Euro teams is some what reasonable for us Eastern people atleast. I hit on certain servers at 110-140 ping which is fairly reasonable.
East Coast vs Euro ping wise wouldn't be so bad West vs Euro can be horrible with 200+ ping
East vs Aussie would be horrendous West vs Aussie wouldn't be so bad.
International or not I guess it would depend if Flayra is willing to pay ship and handleing and what not just to send a video card to another country.
To me the three tournaments thing sounds like the best, but... Yeah, some countries like Korea are left out in that case. Although I never saw any Korean clan apart from the one that made nice videos. Maybe they deserve an Asian tournament as well then. Still... you CAN'T make a worldwide tournament. It has to be somewhat splitted. And in that case you can't split it into 10 parts to make every clan in the world able to play... And the more you wait, the less those cards are attractive. :)

...Or perhaps you should simply hold a NA Only tournament and give out the cards, considering it's nearly 18 months since they were first officially talked about. The Euros and Aussies can have their own continent-only tournament for prizes later. I'm surprised ATI hasn't done anything about these cards gathering dust. Instead of trying to be unrealistic, be practical. The US/Canada have the largest, most stable clan base of any area of the world for NS, and have shown that they can follow through on a league if the league's upkeep is decent. If the tournament is for an actual prize, I'm sure interest will be pretty high.

Although TheAdj's suggestion seems even better. That'd probably seems "unfair" to a part of the rest of the world, but it would be easier to organize in a great way, and if that works and makes good marketing, maybe the rest of the world would get its own tournament later :)

Hell, for an X850 even i'd consider entering the tourny.
