now you could theoreticly use the full potential of your athlon 64 processor (something a regular XP cant)... because XP64 fully supports them now .... the rest depends on the software you want to run i think...

Expect to see some cool 64 bit software that can really use the extra potential of optimized 64 bit code in the future, but for the time it is pretty much totally useless.
Theoretically 64 bit games could be made to run almost twice as fast, but don't expect to see any 64 bit games for a long while (at least until intel has a personal computer model 64 bit CPU out and not just AMD I would say)

*Technical mode* The advantages of having a 64-bit (64-b from now on) native OS means that programmers can finally target mainstream users with their advanced 64-bit programs. Various modelling programs have been running off of 64-bit bases every since the first 64-b CPU's came out. The change from 32-b to 64-b means that a program can now address with a maximum length of 2^64 (18,446,744,073,709,551,616) characters, as opposed to (4,294,967,296). What this means in terms to us as gamers, means that XP's memory limit is now raised from 4GB, to (theoretically) 18,446,744 TB of RAM. This effect is down to the maximum addressable length, which has increased dramatically.
The change from 32-b games to 64-b games *DOES NOT* mean that the games will run twice as fast, but it means that the calculations can be more complex, this can have a massive effect on the real-time physics core that is being developed at the moment, as the potential physics effects can be theoretically 3 million times longer (forgive the approximate maths, but my calculator gives back a result of "1" when told to divide them against each other...)... */Technical Mode*
Personally, I am sticking to my x32 build of XP, seeing as there is not performance increase, and most applications actually show a performance decrease, becuase they all will need to run in x32 compatibility mode...
Actually I found this out yester day that the new CPU that I got the new computer is 64 bit, and I didn’t even notice. So I guess that means I have the ability to upgrade to 64 bit stuff when it’s more main steam.

I still wonder why no one has mentioned this, but currently, if you go to microsoft's website, and head the the section devoted to Windows XP Pro X64, they claim it is still in development....
Guess they want to see how well it will sell/perform in asian markets first.
I noticed someone mentioned something along the lines of how 64-bit software will not be seriously developed till intel releases consumer-end 64-bit compliant cpu's...
Well, there supposed to be released in the second quarter of this year. All 6-series pentium CPU's will support EMT64 (Intel's 64-bit platform). We should also see the new Pentium Dual-core CPU's this quarter as well.
From what I have already read of WinXP Pro X64, it will initially support up to two multi-core CPU's, up to 128GB of RAM, and up to 16 Terabytes of Virtual Memory!
I was just reading from the latest issue of Maximum PC that Users who hold a vaild license of Win XP Pro will be able to trade in their 32-bit lisence for a 64-bit one via an authentication process on microsoft's website... absolutely free!
The downside is that you will have to own a copy of Win XP Pro, if you have home, you will first have to upgrade to pro. Further more, if your version of win XP Pro (OEM) came with your computer (ie. Prefab machine: ie. HP, compaq, Dell), you will have to contact the manufacterer of the PC and see if they are participating in the program.
All in all I am quite excited, and I am anticapating more and more, when this gets released into North America, and techies like us who work in technical publications get to toy with the OS, and we really get to see what kind of performance difference you will see when you are running a 64-bit app, on a 64-bit OS (with 64 bit drivers), on a 64-bit machine, compared to a 32-bit version of the same app on on a 32-bit version of the OS, on the 64-bit rig.
I also would like to see a similar comparison on how bad a performance hit you will take running a 32-bit app on a 64-bit OS, compared to the same app running on a 32-bit OS
