From what I have seen, larger venders have been providing 64-bith drivers for months now, that being ATI and NVIDIA. Now for this old Aopen PCI modem I have...that is another question. Hopefully microsoft will have a nice, highly-compatible generic 64-bit driver for my modem ready when i'm ready

yeah.. x64 comes with tons of 64 bit drivers.. so i dont see much problems with actual hardware.... i remember that i have thrown away all the useless install disks, because xp came with almost all ive needed....

Wait so does intel not have a 64 bit cpu out yet, or am I just confused. Cus 3dmark05 says my cpu is indeed 64 bit

Intel has 64 bit cpus, but they're mainly used for servers.

Yes there were the Itaniums, which were for enterprise equipment. They also made Xeon's with EMT64 for similiar reasons.

Apparently all 6 series pentium chips coming out this quarter will feature EMT64.

They prolly spent more money designing the flashy CD than they did designing the OS...

You do know that Windows XP X64 isn't compatible with 32-bit applications, right? This means that you have to upgrade or discard anything 32-bit.

Last I was aware it had 32 bit emulation.

Would be a bit stupid for them to develop an OS that nobody could make use of for a damn long time.

It is compatible with 32-bit software, as jimmy has blatantly pointed out.

Interesting thing I just read off toms hardware' is that when emulating 32-bit proc, the 32-bit apps can dip slightly in perf, but apparently some 32 bit apps will increase in perf as well(when compared to the same 32 bith app running on a 32 bit OS)!

I can't wait to see some in-depth reviews on this!

As well, a co-worker of mine pondered today about how long it will take for a Service Pack to come out. We both agreed that we should see one by the time it hits North America .

You're wildly deluded about the issues involved in windows OS design. With all the built in drivers, you're probably looking at a good 2-3 million lines of code in this last release.
