[wip] Unnamed Siege Cannon

ZeroByteZeroByte Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3057Members
Here be a siege cannon of my own design. I'm not exactly caring about the polycount right now. Although it is already reaching err.. 1692 polys. I have no poly count target right now and I really don't have an estimates cause I'm not quite sure how much more details the missing parts will contain.

I started off with a concept sketch for this but I'm not sure where it went so now I'm just going with the flow on this. I guess I'm going to set a 3000 poly ceiling for this, irunno.

This is incomplete. I would guess its at about 40% completion, at least design wise which does not take into account optimization and UV mapping. I'm posting this for comments and ideas.

Pretty tasty, man. I'm not sure about the shields on the sides, though. Marines can't "use" the siege cannons (except through special plugins), so there's no operator to protect. It's just dead weight. It does look good, though.

looks cool man, yea the shields seem a bit off.

personally i like the shields... but if you want real cool... give them a boarder, then make them transparent... force field shields

I like the shields. Gives it a nice real-world artillery feel.

I'd count that as damn near finished, although i don't know what you want to do with it.

i like the shield things, i think the force field idea is quite cool too, would be a good implementation of additive transparency <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Lets just say that they are there too... help focus the gravitational force generated by the cannon <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Bingo.

    I think it looks great.

Funny story. This model was started some time ago. I hit unhide all and lo and behold, there was a cover thingy over the barrel. I had forgotten all about it. I'm keeping the shields. They were a large part of the original concept. All I have to do now is create some sort of housing for the rear legs and finish up the base.

The barrel of the siege cannon borrows heavily from this <a href='http://cocommand.com/shots/concept/200301240/12_20_02_5.jpg' target='_blank'>Eschaton concept art</a>.

Looks more like a gatling gun than a futuristic gravity gun. Still, it does look very nice.

    Lookin good
The barrel reminds me of the blank firing adaptor for the M2 HMG.

This is very good, looks like you can press e on it and control it. jks

A sucky render, but this the final look of the compulsor cannon (I've decided on a name for it.. and a back story). It weighs in at 1788 polys and that is with optimization. Ah well, at least its less than the HP restower. May have issues when the comm turret farms though, so yay!

It's still very nice. Have you given a thought to what the animations will look like?

Absolutely gorgeous! The shields give it a nice touch, too. I really hope this one makes it through all the hurdles there are when it comes to getting a model finished. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

looks like those mounted turrets from half life with the shields on. but i like the concept a lot, especially the barrel

the only similarity is its a gun with 2 shields on the sides... the old hl one was more of a box attached to another box attached to 2 more boxes.... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    very nice by the way...

UV mapping at 5%. Don't worry kaine, I'm just switching between your model and mine.

nice looking design i agree with a earlier post you should make the side shields forcefieldy and transperant

All righty, I'll give this one a go. Not skinned anything for <i>ages</i> though, so it'll probably turn out pants <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

edit: is there any color scheme you have in mind, ZB?

edit #2: it may just be the way you exported it, but vertices seem to have "split" a bunch - you might want to re-weld everything (I just did, and it fixed some of the smoothing in the .3ds file)

I leave the colour scheme completely up to you. Although a lot of people will probably clamor for TSA green. I was thinking more along the lines of a TSA Spec Ops look, but then again I leave it up to you.

As for the unwelded vertices... ehh I don't think I can do anything about it. My copy of 3dsm 5 has always exported .3ds' with some parts unwelded. Selecting all and welding should fix it alright though. I could give you the .max if you want.

I also posted the UV's over at the DLCSS forum.. I don't know how well it will be recieved though seeing how most of them will never use the model.

    More renders!

Skinning stage 1 (details, decals, and all sorts of things to be added). ZB, I moved those things joining the shields to the body down a wee bit as they didn't look quite right straddling those different textures, hope you don't mind.

    <img src='http://www.tangledslinky.org/images/compressor-stage1.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

The reflections (legs and barrel) and the rust on the barrel are temporary til I decide what to do there.
