If you do buy one make sure it's a good one, and perhaps mount it on plywood. They break easy. Mine did.

After being in denial about it myself for awhile and refusing to admit that it was fun when I tried it once, I have a new conclusion:

DDR is like drinking - In the company of others, and especially in a party atmosphere, it is fine. If you do it alone however you need help.

Go for it. If I owned a console I'd have one for sure.

You get a minus D5 X 1 saving throw to manliness.
You get a plus D10 X 1 throw for awesome parties.
You also get a minus D12 X 3 throw for actually buying one.
You recieve a bonus to defense of plus D20 X 2, when someone insults your manliness.

    So.. in theory
    Assuming max throws are used.

    (10) - (5) - (36) + (40) = +(10) possible increase to manliness stat vs insults to said manliness. (Don't forget the automatica plus D4 X 1 to party throwing bonus)

I'd say its a good investment.

I'm coming over to your house, okay?

I bought a dance mat once. It was a cheap piece of garbage that constantly registered ghost (Oh lord, I accidentally typed goat) steps.

If you want to DDR, I'd highly recommend checking out <a href='http://www.stepmania.com' target='_blank'>StepMania</a>. You can practice with your fingers on the keyboard if you like, but you can also buy a USB adapter for Playstation/XBox controllers and plug a dance mat in to the computer for use in SM.

I play on Stepmania... have a crapload of songs (about 500), on a 'Ignition Style' pad... I.E. I paid half the price for a $100 ignition pad for something thats just as good quality from levelsix.com, and got a PC adapter for it.

Heh, I don't see why everyone thinks that DDR is a girly thing. It's quite an endurance trial, and it's bloody fun. Besides, who doesn't like to have fun while making themselves look like a fool?

'Course, people tend to consider dancing to be a girly thing. But the only things that remotely even suggest dance about DDR are the name and the fact that you can freestyle.

In arcades, I prefer to play games like Guitar Freaks and Percussion Freaks, though. Too many DDR platforms are greasy and don't function very well. :/

people seem also to be overlooking age as a variable in all this..
its well known that age is inversly proportional to coolness when it comes to dance machines...

I say this as a past addict.. there just comes a point when the fun is outweighed by the disgusted looks of passers by, trying to sheild their childrens eyes from the visual abomination of a grown man jumping about to Jpop

but since were talking about home use, youll at least get to choose who thinks less of your 'street creds'....

I got a metal one, but I got it off some second-rate linked-to-by-Yahoo! site rather than Play-Asia, like I originally planned... I paid more for it, came in bad condition (banged up during shipping) and now the freaking down arrow's broken so I have to press X on the pad, which is convienientley up at the top-left side of the pad, which makes Tsurugi and most of the Afronova/Paranoia/MAX songs pretty hard...

Ok, so i'm on the look-out for a dance-mat and game for my X-Box now because they seem to be more than acceptable in modern society. Thanks for the interest (and slightly confusing -Cyndane) replies.

For those of you that like their dancing games, I reccomend Bust-A-Groove for the PSX. I'm browsing eBay and Amazon for it later but it'll probbaly have a silly price tag.

/me runs off to try Step-Mania

DDR is a great endurance workout, and it'll tone those abs.

Most people thing it's dorky to play DDR until they've played it. I got my friend to play it with me 1 time and he was hooked.

I think they game i've got is for Playstation and it's DDR Konamix. I like it cause it's got a great variety of good songs.
