<div class="IPBDescription">bargin bin find</div> I was in my local Game and looking in the 3 for £10 i got myself a few games i'd mostly not even heard of.

among them a game with a description that instantly made me thing "its like ns".

reading from the manual, it tells me its like a fps, with powerful close range attacks as well, an essential commander that builds on and selects equipment and upgrades for both teams(so not utterly like ns), and the human with tech vs beast with pure might (+magic).

<a href='http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/561393.asp?q=savage' target='_blank'>Game Ranking page for Savage</a>

so.. i'm installing it now, anyone else had any experiences with it?

BLOODY GORGES! i didnt type that E in the topic, the gorges are interfering with my equipment! HAX, HAX I TELL YOU!

I played the demo. Pretty neat. The company didn't do so well with it, though.

Played the demo.. a year ago or whenever it was released. Wasn't too impressive, and someone is making a mod for HL1 based on it (although, all they really did was steal the HUD and make an HL1 enviroment with they're own models).

I don't think it's much like NS, though. Sure, there's the guy who gives the team all their buildings. But that's as far as the "commander" really goes. He can make a few peasent guys to do work for him, and other players can mine and build as well, but.... there's not a whole lot similiar to NS. The gameplay, for instance, is totally different. On top of that, you do everything by hitting it with your axe/sword/weapon. Build, repair, mine, kill and maim... everything.

Sorry to say, but savage sucked hard in my eyes, the graphic was pretty half-assed (though I really digged the concept), the UI, the way you moved and aimed, the netcode!! God, *shivers*

This game is freeware now, sucks that you spent money on it.

Flayra really enjoyed it as far as I know. Myself, I never got around to pick it up.

I thought it was a neat concept but could have used a lot more work

played the demo a year or so ago when it came out for a little while

oh yea! I remember this from the beta test!

I played it for a while, pretty neat. running around collecting red stone, bashng those penguin/monkey like things. and Shooting people with my sniper bow.

    Pretty funny moments like ns.

The only good matches I had with savage was at my local lan centre where lag was minimul and if people said "shut up nub" an extension and concentrated force of the hand sorted them out.

It was fun. I remember pretty much owning a whole team as a shamen. Was quite funny considering it was like the long range siege unit for the beasts.

But otherwise it was a nice concept of a game but really flunked online.

alligence is another ns like game that went freeware (and open source) the curse of rts/fps?

HUGE manual too.. i've always been a manual reader... spent more time reading the baldurs gate manual than i did in my first run through of the game <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

off topic: i got it with arena wars (not even opened the box) and True crime: streets of La for £10(looked for the manual... read the backstory and put the game on the floor under my pc for later),

    i also got B-17 flying fortress for 49p ^_^=win!

i'm such a budget gimp, with the exception of hl2, i cant remember the last game i got that wasnt 2nd hand or budget. still... my back catalog is in the hundreds of games now.

    Just because a game is an fps/rts dosen't make it like NS. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Battlezone and Battlezone II are also FPS/RTS hybrids (although they use vehicles primarily). I haven't played Battlezone, but BZ2 was good.

every time i look at a game box it'll read genre1/genre2

are vanilla genres not good enough any more?

freeallegiance.org hosts the allegiance game. It came out in 2000 and was p2p, but didn't do so well. Now its freeware, with a fan base in the hundreds.

Pretty neat game really. Both sides have a commander, who can pick the faction, which have different bonuses. It's a RTS-Flight Sim. The folks there are more tolerant, although if you're a newb don't even think of doing any advanced stuff else you'll be blamed. At least in NS if you get a HMG and stay with a group but die you don't get hollered at. But if you get a bomber and don't know how to use it well, heh.

Are you sure its free-ware and not abandonware?

    I like savage...

though the net code is really bad... and the game could use a 100 cm coat of polish... but other then that this game couldve been very big...

It has a diffrent mood and gameplay from ns... though they are pretty similar...
They are more like very distant cousins who havent seen eachother for 30 years and live in diffrent countires...

I thought it was really cool for about 15 hours of play. Then I got extremely bored with it. It doesn't have the style of ns, that's for sure.

I bought it, tryed to play it, found it extremely boring, and took it back :/

Might download it if its freeware, and try it again, see if my taste has changed at all <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's a very good game, it has the concepts of ns game play, but is really nothing like it. Good graphics, its just too bad S2Games abandoned it and its support for the game. Whoever said it was abandonware is correct, you can download it free, but the company out of the 7 who founded it only 2 are left the rest left to make a new company and game so its just that the remaining 2 don't care and there technically really isn't an S2Games company anymore....

Both Battlezones were class games. A wee bit thin on plot/content, but excellent concept.

If its abandoned, does that mean theres no online servers running it anymore and thus it would be even pointless to download for free? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

connect directly to any IP of a server that you wish to connect to.. so long as you new it before hand.

There was 207 players last time I looked. I too played the beta and wanted the game to be successful, but I think they took it the wrong direction. Some people really like it though.

Apparently the authentication servers were shut down, and the client is freely available to download over at the <a href='http://forums.s2games.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/971600065/m/48210124711' target='_blank'>official site</a>. To play, it requires the 2.00e patch and, i think, the latest EX2 as well.
  • solcottsolcott Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22307Members
esuna is right about the auth servers being down, so it no longer checks your cd key (meaning you can just use like 12345 as a key even tho the retail ones are like 30 chars long) but you still need to make a username/password while in the game for it to keep track of your player icon/what clan you are in.

as for ex2 being required it isnt, but its a recommended mod that will work on any server and makes the game alot better. for example in normal savage, non-commander units never know what upgrades your team has(it would be like never knowing if you have armour1 or weapons2 in NS other than ur comm saying "ok i got u armor1") or what is being upgraded, but with ex2 you can hold down a key(i think alt) and it tells you what upgrades you have/what your getting and a bunch of other stuff that should have been in the retail game but wasnt.
