<div class="IPBDescription">Weapon changing button setup</div> Hello everyone,
as of lately ive been doing a lot of spectating to try and learn from the better players, and one thing that stood out to me was there fluid like changing between weapons.
im curious as to what people set there buttons as to change between weapons so quickly. For aliens and Marines
i currently just have my 2nd mouse button bind to last weapn and then the regular weapons assigned to the 1 - 4 buttons.
i have found the last button to be handy but sometimes when im a fade i get my last weapon mixed up with metablosim when i want to blink and it sometimes gets me killed

Now just press 1-2-3-4 and it will instantly change to that weapon.

He is correct. That's the best way to do it, in my opinion. There are scripts that will do some stuff for you, but I don't like to use them.
mwheelup slot1
mwheeldown slot2
mwheelclick slot3
x slot4
(for wasd movement)
Easy to use, fast, not much movement. I like it.
mouse2 as slot1
w as slot2
r as slot3
g as slot4
(hud_fastswitch 1 of course)
1 thru 4 for those slots
and mouse4 for slot 2 (for those quick pistol whippings/parasiting/spores/blink/devour)
Middle-mouse button for Weapon slot 1.
Left Keypad arrow (or 4 on the Keypad) for Weapon slot 2.
Right click for Weapon slot 3.
And Enter/Return for Weapon slot 4.
Arrow Keys for Movement.
And left click for fire.
My configuration is set for ease of use, comfort and not to be confusing, and to prioritize the weapons, since Weapon 4 is used rarely it does not have a very quick and reachable point, whilst Slot 1 and slot 2 are easily accessible and I have found my configuration to be both well suited for Marine or Alien.
But that is just my opinion, and I really do not like configurations that are set up and have any thing to do with the alphabet and numbers section of the keyboard because it is very easy to accidentally hit some damn key that you shouldn't have and die or drop the wrong building. I have used this configuration since 98' and unless games become so complex that they require more than god knows how many keys allocated to specific uses I am happy with this one.
mouse2 (right) slot1
mousewheel jump
mouse4&5 (side) slot2
works fine for me...
The key below the backspace key.
arrow keys as movement.
kp_end slot2
kp_leftarrow slot1
kp_downarrow slot3
kp_5 slot4
pgdn +reload
mwheelup/down +jump
mouse2 +crouch (slot3 for alien, lastinv when i release mouse2)
I don't use lastinv. ever.
arrowkeys to move
shift +duck
del drop weapon
end +use
pagedown slot4
ins +showscores
home +showminimap
kp_ins +reload
mwheelup and down +jump
kp_leftarrow slot1
kp_5 slot2
enter slot3
pagedown slot4

Find the arrow key pointing up and go to the left a few empty slots and thats the pipe.

€%^($*)ß!!! *Hate* keyboards like that. Pipe is adjacent to Y, ALWAYS! New fangled keyboards with dedicated Euro keys on the right side of Rshift.... AAAa. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

...until I need to use leap or metabolise. :s
SJ, what are your movement keys?

Back to the original poster: There is no write or wrong setup. Chose what suits you, experiment with many things. I've tried ESDF and Jmms' crazy BNMJL thing. Mouse1 +forward mouse2 +moveback is another extremist style.
The best setup probably is the one that allows you to play without distrubing the movement keys. Have QFZXCTG (easily accessed keys,) bound to something USEFUL.
USE the 5+ buttons on your mouse.
USE fastswitch.
DON'T use "insta bite" leap stuff, or fade metab/blink scripts. ("Although hold-down mouse2 to metab, release to select blink" is reasonably useful)
HTH.
When quickswitching to slot 1, it took me awhile to get past hitting ~ by mistake and opening up the console in the middle of battle---bad thing. But after a while your fingers get used to the config enough that you don't hit extra buttons by mistake any more. Then your biggest challenge is if you ever buy a new keyboard with the buttons in slightly different places.
At Blue November--Pipe next to Y? Y is in the middle of the top key row, its like 6 keys away from the "special" keys at the side. What language is your keyboard in?
And the buttons to the right of R-Shift, with the oversized Enter button, are actually old-style, not new-style, IIRC.

Deutsch. It's Z on a UK keyboard layout. I got tired of Alt+****'ing to an alternate keyboard setting when typing in German, so I bought a German one on ebay and used it normally. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
"oversized enter button"? Approx 2*1.5 keys here. I'm talking about ones where SHIFT is cut to 1*2 instead of 1*3 and a dedicated Euro key is added there. But whatever, let's not derail the topic discussing keyboard layouts. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
As for the accidental hitting of ~, I find rebinding console to one of BNMHJK is a good solution; out of the way, but in reach of left hand easily.
I had touble binding my wireless Mouse4 and 5 buttons if they were anything other then the defaults (Back and forward in a browser. How dumbtarded.)
I use the movment keys, because they're oversized on my keyboard, and the weapon switchers off to the side on the number keypad.
Only problem with HUD_fastswitch is that it no applyo to multi-slot 4 weapons, which does screw me up when I go to weld, hit attack, and..... nothing happens!
I used to be real good at using a mousewheel for weapon switching (With HUd_fastswitch at 0 at that), but that was before I got this crazy optical mouse. It doesn't have the click-click-click bumps that every other mouse has and it overinputs mwheel.
Q for lastinv
Hud_fastswitch 1 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
works wonders, i don't find scripts better or easier for this.
To select each slot4 weapon with its own key:
<!--QuoteBegin-a civilian+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (a civilian)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
alias slot4welder "weapon_webspinner; weapon_primalscream; weapon_divinewind; weapon_charge; weapon_acidrocketgun; weapon_welder"
bind <key1> slot4welder
bind <key2> weapon_mine
bind <key3> weapon_grenade
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
To cycle between slot4 weapons with one key:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
alias welder "weapon_welder; alias slot4cycle mines"
alias mines "weapon_mine; alias slot4cycle grenade"
alias grenade "weapon_grenade; alias slot4cycle welder"
alias slot4cycle welder
bind <key> slot4cycle
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
HTH
(Check out the scripting forum <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showforum=62' target='_blank'>here</a>)
You have the toggle off when you're playing marine so you have weapon one and weapon two, and the toggle on when you're playing as a skulk with 2 hives (leap), off otherwise. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
kp_end slot2
kp_leftarrow slot1
kp_downarrow slot3
kp_5 slot4
pgdn +reload
mwheelup/down +jump
mouse2 +crouch (slot3 for alien, lastinv when i release mouse2)
