Whats Your Philosophy On Life?

How do you view the world? How do you think you should live your life?

For me:

I like to think that things are axiomatic, and therefore I try to identify the tiny variables of life.

I try to have perspective.

I realize there is only one life to live.

There is nothing wrong with hedonistic ideals, as long as they don't harm anyone.

There is no reason to fear mortality.

People are inherently stupid.

Plan for the worst; be prepared for the best.

Laugh at it all.

The only sacred things are Love, Knowledge, and Art.

You are not obligated to accomplish anything.

Whats done can not be undone.

The world is not inherently mysterious or magical.

But above all, the thing I've learned that allows me to be happiest:

Find beauty in decay.

    As for philosophy...

    I think, therefore I am.

To be or not to be (in relation to killing one's self)

As how I think life should be...

    Life is short

the most valuable thing is memories

Ideally, I'd like to follow a Kantian philosophy, but practically, I'm probably just selfish.

    Well let's see.

I tend to lean heavily towards the behavioristic view of psychology, where a person is molded from their envirnoment. They develope their own traits and personalities based on how their envirnoment acts upon them and how they react to said envirnoment.

I think most people are basically good in being and intention, but not all can be of course.

At the moment I don't tend to believe in an afterlife or a divine being as I have yet to see or experience anything to tell me otherwise. I more look at life instead of working hard to gain access to the afterlife, you should work hard to gain noteriety to live on in the minds of those to come (i.e. George Washington has many many statues and depictions of him throughout our country, he has gained noteriety and will live on for a long time in memory).

I believe that the only things sacred are the moments spent with people and as such said moments should be made the best of.

This should probably be put into the disscussion forum too, since this is a more serious topic.

Hmm, I always viewed the word from kinda a scientific way: Life is just a bunch of chemical reactions. Nothing really seems to matter, since its going to be gone in a hundred years anyways, its all about the history you make on the entire world.

See, thats why I said I don't fear mortality. Because if I don't fear mortality, I don't have to be motivated to "leave my mark". What do I care what people say about me when I'm dead? I'll be dead! The only reason I'd care what is said about me after my death is if I feared dying, because gaining fame that outlives me would be a way of maintaining a prescense in the land of the living.

Dude... my philosophy of life and morality are intertwined in with my religion... I could talk for days on this... seriously... there's nothing I could type here with in a reasonable ammount of time that would make me satisfied as it being my answer. Sorry. Furthermore, such things tend to continually grow and change over time.

QUOTE (Bullethead)

You think life's a **** and then you die

Which if you think about it, can be applied to anything and everything. If you can find a way to make it apply to even boring tasks like studying for an exam it can make it easier and more than likely you'll do better on that exam.

    Live without fear.

I've followed this philosophy and it's brought great things to my life. Never scared to try new things and I rarely have any regrets looking back on my life.

Because of this following, I've got great stories to tell kids and grandkids some day, and hey, i'm still youthful so I've still got about 10-20 years of fearless things to do.

edit: also, life is so much easier if you're not worrying and stressing over things.

Live each day on a minute to minute basis, help others because there is no deity or superpower out there that will, learn as much as you can about everything you can and try not to worry about all the questions you can't answer in your own head.

This is going to sound silly coming from a guy who hates children, but I think the most important thing you can do in life is to be a good parent and raise children who aren't screwups, and who will in turn do the same. Also you should strive to help humanity, be it by discovering a cure for something or an otherwise radical thing, or just by simply being a nice person.

    I have a saying...

"You get it where you can take it."

Now, before you go ranting and raving about this and how perverted it is, lemme explain. This applys to just about everything in life, not just anything sexual. Observe:

Money. You get money where you can take money. See? Its that simple.
Food. You get food where you can take food. Amazing!

Now, it can get pretty bad, later on. Watch.

Money. You get money where you can take money when you sell crack. Ohnos!
Food. You get food where you can take food off of your buddies now dead body. Ew!

So, I created an "amendment" to this saying/rule/philosophy of mine. "There are exceptions to EVERYTHING." So, now it reads:

"You get it where you can take it, but there are exceptions to everything."

So, no more selling crack to get money! No more killing your friends for food!

So, what does all of this mean? It means that sometimes in life, you shouldn't be picky, because things don't always go as planned. Oh no, you didn't get that raise. Either work harder, do overtime, or get an additional job. Aw, you can't take you girl to a high class resturant. Take her on a picnic or cook for her instead.

See, this saying of mine just envokes ways to get around trouble spots in your life!

My basic philosphies, and a general basis for each:

Do not fear death, for it is that last great answer.
-probably only applies to the intrinsically curious.

Discover all you can, while you can.
-similarily: be prepared to rebuild the world (that is: know how things work)

Plan for the worst, hope for the best and expect the middle ground.
    -self explanatory, I think.

    Judge in threes.
-first may be a fluke, second may be a coincidence, third is for sure - unless disproven earlier

    Gratitude is for the gracious.
-use "Thank You" when someone does something you couldn't have done yourself, or could have done with moderate trouble.

Do not expect recompense for favors.
-do things to be kind, not to have them done in return.

Expectance of favors should be met with denial of action.
-I'm reminded of a story, where a woman bakes a pie for a man every day for a month, and then one day she's unable to cook; the man asks her where his pie is.

Everything has an explanation. (and it doesn't involve magic)
-cause and effect exist for a reason

Initial Honesty in earnest endeavors is imperative.
-stretched truths are fine, but blatant lies are asking for trouble. It's why I cringe during movies with such loose plots, that they rely upon an untrustworthy protagonist.
-simplified (but also generalized) as "honesty is the best policy."

Anonymity is not a cause for repudiation of morals.
-just because they wont know it was you doesn't mean you should do it

Instinctive acts of the world are inherently immoral.
    -think before you act.

    And (somewhat) to mantrid:

QUOTE (Mantrid @ May 11 2005, 07:23 PM)

    People are inherently stupid.

A person can be smart, but people in groups are inherently stupid. A lapse of proper behavior occurs in groups (generally the individuals feel stronger in a group, and to maintain strength are willing to go outside individual adherences to maintain their relationships). The best choice is seperated individuals grouped together (but unfortunately not every one of those individuals can be smart).

It is best to try maintain recognition of this, so that you don't become 'stupid' while in a group.
