Question About Waypoints?

LaserApaLaserApa Join Date: 2002-10-27 Member: 1638Members
<div class="IPBDescription">whats standard practice?</div> Might sound like a stupid question but here goes...

(hypothetical early game scenario)

I stand around in my base waiting for orders. My commender gives me a waypoint, and i start moving. halfway there i get skulked. Too bad, i say. I respawn.

Now... what do i do? should i wait in base for new orders? or get moving again since i still have a waypoint set up?

I havnt been playing marine too long (team ballance) and i love being alien anyways.. and most commanders are a bit too pressed for time to listen to my questions...

Any help?

The most advisable tactic is to stick together with your fellow Marines. If you're a take-charge type, get a couple Marines to come with you to the waypoint. Always remember, if you're out there and alone, your survival chances are close to nil. The Marines are quite dependant on each other for support. To answer your question, I recommend you get to the waypoint with a high amount of caution, bring backup and remember where you were ambushed, chances are the alien is still there.

I agree with Injury on this 1... also remember to tell your commander that you'd been killed, in case he dident notice. Ask your commander to WP other players to the same location or gather a crew by uself.

I knew i should have made that part clearer...

    (hypothetical early game scenario) remember?

yes yes.. sticking together is a well advised marine tactic, but that was not my question.

What i mean is, in case i die (no matter how), should i try to get to my waypoint that's still there when i respawn or should i sit tight and wait for new orders?

if the later, i think your waypoint should be canceled upon death..

Try and go to the waypoint again, just becuase you didn't make it, doesn't mean that the base doesn't need to be set up anymore(I used a base as a example..)

A small misunderstanding, though my recommendation for moving back to your waypoint applies to your early game question (its not as if you're going to get Heavy Armor or a Grenade Launcher in the first five minutes). Hypothetically as you've said, many things can happen early game so there just isn't a definite answer to your question. I consider waypoints fairly important, because the commander has a better view of the overall situation than I do.

So if i move out with a team of marines, and i die by the skulk but the rest survive, i should try to rush back there on my own? not wait until a few more hombres are ready to roll?

    Also, how can i remember my waypoint when i die? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Does anyone know if that radar map thing will ever be made to work like i guess most of us thought it would? marking fellow marines with blips and such? and possibly distinguish wich marines have the same waypoint as you do?

Depending on the situation (say if the waypoint is close or far from base) will be how you move. Say the waypoint is a mere twenty meters outside of base in a pretty much straight run. You can get back there easily enough, however if the waypoint is say through piperooms and curves, you may want to wait for one or two buddies. It really is up to you.

When the Commander sets a waypoint, if he's tactically adept he'll mention where the waypoint is going to be (i.e. specific room). I haven't played Marines in awhile, so forgive me for any mistakes, but if memory serves when the Commander waypoints you to a staging area say "Sewer Vestibule Level", the text shows up under the distance. Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played Marines in about a week.

Just a reply to LaserApa, yes the marine mini-map will end up much more like the commander's is now. Its just one of the many things that need improving but wasn't deemed important by the dev team to delay the release, which i'd agree with personally.

i like never use waypoints as a commander. i just tell my men "go wherever the hell you want but just go in groups and keep welding each other and take turns welding and tell me when you need something". whenever i set a waypoint i say "oops, ignore the waypoint". also i watch the men when they are fighting and put my mouse over them to see if they need health and then i drop it near them and i say "skulk is coming!!" whenever i hear the pit-pat, also i just tell them when one of our bases is attacked, usually i'll say "that room with the 2 resource thingies is being attacked, i want you to go there and kill the aliens coz i don't want to lose that room coz it has those 2 nice nozzle thingies in it so i like it a lot" and then after a while we win. i don't know how to do waypoints.

    u're joking right vipr? :S

i'd have to say, find a buddy marine early who communicates. i.e. if you ask for welding, he helps you out, and vice versa. always stick with your buddy to go to wp etc.

will help alot if your cmdr is a noob. then you and your buddy can move toegether to cap hives etc and ask the cmdr for help later.

Not using waypoints and winning = One really bad alien team
