Lost Disc Space?

400 MB filled by nothing.
I was trying to download the Beyond Good and Evil Speed Run. I had around 800+ MB left of disc space, I'm very low on this POS 20 GB, and I started to download the 600+ MB version. Windows like to tell me that the download can't be completed at 99% because there's no HD space left, but there's clearly 200 MB or so. I cleared my harddrive to around a 1 Gig free and tried the the download again. I got the same thing around 400 MB. So I quit the download. But now I'm stuck with 400 MB left and it seems whatever I managed to get of the Speed Run is still taking space, but the folder I saved it to is blank.

Is this a possiblity or am I just losing it? Because the Speed Run was the last thing I tried to download.

i think i had something like this, but way worse. my 80 gb hardrive was just filled one day. no idea how. i downloaded a disk scanner thing to see what was taking up so much room on my hard disk, and apparently there were 2 temp files that were 25 gb each.

try using this utility to clean it up. or look for a hard disk scanner to see whats taking up the room.

Bad clusters can do this, do a full chkdsk /f

system restore points.

goto start --> programs --> accessories --> system tools --> system restore

i think you can delete all restore points but the latest one, that freed up 2gb on mine.

I had this happen once before, i searched in my windows directory for anything over 50-100mb or so (as there shouldnt be anything that big in there anyway). And there were 9 428mb or so files (worms) . When i went to delete them, my pc froze. But luckily i know my friend Command Prompt Deletified.

But this is after i used SpaceMonger, this is a small program that searches your whole computer for big files that may be lost or un-wanted.

Try defragmentation. Once, I defragged a very very old harddrive and relieved 10GB.

Technology can be queer sometimes.

Check MFT/Page File, those can be a big factor too...

Cleanup decided for some reason that .tmpl (template) files are somehow .tmp (temprorary) files and deleted a whole lot of them before I managed to stop it. Sigh, time to get out the old undeleter.

You should know that if you're using IE, it's retarded and saves the file first to a temp, then copies it to your destination, then deletes the temp. So, for a short period, the file takes up twice as much room as advertised.

Sue IE for false advertisement

I've heard of virus's that can make files 'grow' over time, check some old files and make sure their not weirdly out of porportion.

Attempts:

1. Virtual Memory says I have 812 free, I don't know how to free it from there.
2. I didn't want to try CleanUp, I didn't want to try messing up my HD.
3. chkdsk /f didn't go through.
4. I turned off System Restore long ago.
5. You can't Defragment unless you have 15% HD space free, I only have 2%.
6. What's an MFT/Page File? I'm dumb.
7. I don't use IE, thankfully.
8. I believe I'm free of Virus'.
9. SpaceMonger seemed to have found the culprit:

I've darkened the Speed Run[Which apparently is 2 files now taking up 900MB], and some other files I have no clue as to what they are... but would they be safe to delete? They're taking up quite a bit of space.

Thanks guys, now I know I'm not going crazy due to my HD.

cleanup just deletes all of your temporary files anywhere on your hard drive. i guess it would cause problems with .tmpl filetypes, but ive never had a problem with it.

I've found the problem. Too many dodgy Michael Jackson stuff in temp, and a serious shortage of Naruto and Poi/Sticking videos. Fire Poi is teh pwn.

Oh, and by looking at your temporary internet files and the temp folder, that's taking a loy of space. It also looks like the instaler you downloaded is in there, delete the 1/2 file of it, clean out your temp folder and run the installer from temporart internet files directly.

It's just the Naruto OSTs, and 287 MB of Glowstringing is a lot for me. I prefer chems rather than fire. I don't have any fire vids.

I'll clearing the temp folder now.

<edit>I went from 400 MB, to 2.08 GB, thanks guys. But can I delete the "pagefile" and "hibersys" files?
• Leaderz0rzLeaderz0rz Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7847Members
hibersys file is for hibernating, do you use hibernation? if not go in your power options and disable it, it should delete the file.

Your pagefile is your virtual memory. So no, you can't delete it.

You think you have it bad? My hard drive suddenly decided to forget 90 gigs of data. I am certain that somehow windows is to blame for this.
• BulletHeadBulletHead Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30049Members
Microsoft is to blame... they made windows HORRIBLE at uninstalling / deleting temporary files

do 3 things

1) Do a Disk Cleanup and check old programs and hte like
2) Go into the C drive and remove ANY folders pertaining to any old program you NEVER USE anymore
3) Go to www.download.com and get DiskKeeper

Yea, i usually manually delete directries after installing, cause they dont always go away. I also sometimes go thru the registry with regcleaner and clear out all the crap.

Not only does it save space and confusion, but sometimes incomplete uninstalls can mess up new installs or reinstalls.

My hard drive forgot all my playlists. It doesn't think that there are any files in the Media Library. The files are still there, thank god, but I now have to spend hours manually assembling playlists. And as for my playlists devoted to favorites... god have mercy on my bloated, tortured soul.
