Natural Selection Hit Reg & Amxx Plugins

NSPWNSNSPWNS Join Date: 2005-01-24 Member: 37957Members, Constellation
The hit registry on a server I maintain is slighty f'd up, if you would excuse my french.
I have heard rumors this is due to too many Amxx plugins, now if you actually know what plugins are and how they work then this rumors sounds... incorrect shall we say.

So, once again I am requesting the knowledge and wisdom of the official NS forums when I ask... does the amount of Amxx 1.01 plugins affect the hit registry of bullets etc. on the game Natural Selection 3.02?

If yes, is there a rough plugin count to stay below to keep the hit reg. acceptable?

Eaglerly awaiting your reply,
NSPwns.

I am uncertain of the details and what server spec you have, but I can confirm that a high server load (which results in a low server FPS) will perform worse in terms of acurate prediction and hit registration.

Every plugin you have is very likely to drain some CPU time, be it a small or large amount, so it could be worth the time trying to take them off and see how the server behaves.

I seriously doubt your amxx plugins are affecting hit regs. You may want to direct your question to the coders at the modNS.org Forums to be sure.

There are also some rate tweaks that may help in the competitive forum (if memory serves).. check them out (can someone provide a link please )

You didn't mention which version you have, but AMX Mod X v1.01 is the latest, and is MUCH less cpu intensive than previous versions. As an example, my test server (on an AMD 2200 box with 1gb RAM) has 44 plugins running at any given time, with no hit reg issues.

Also as an Attn to server owners, people hate your plugins. Take them off forever and let us play the same game on any server k.

    amen

In reply to the topic starter, it has been widely used as the reason for bad hitreg for years, but perhaps the server just has a small tickrate tbh.

I remember that there actually was a version of Metamod that was effecting hit registry.

It was fixed, I believe. It could be that server is using an old version of MM.

The regulars on my server would heartily disagree, so I'm guessing "people" means Swift Idiot. Btw, not all plugins are game altering ... some are quite useful, and even fun.

And by Swift Idiot we mean any 2+ year pro or hardcore pubber.

LOEL? I can totally see how cybernetics and spawn invulnerability and all that other assorted useless crap could be useful and even fun.

Listen the only mod NS needs is /stuck, and I'm not talking about utility plug-ins, I'm talking about the plug-ins that turn NS from NS into something similar looking but stupider overall. Stop messing with Flayra's game jesus. Not every server needs to be a G4B2S player cesspool.

Whatever drive people off who needs people?

PS HAHAHAHAHA your sig is advertising MvM and custom maps. TOTALLY CREDIBLE NOW AIN'T WE?

Why do you hate plugins so much? The gameplay changes from 1.0 to 3.03 are far more radical than any of the plugins out there.

You bet we're credible. If you dislike MvM or custom maps simply steer clear. Again, there are MANY plugins out there that don't alter gameplay or are merely informative, e.g. Admin Icons, killsounds, ReadyRoom Music, RateEnforce, Awards Display, and the list goes on, and on, and on... If you think these plugins alter gameplay from what the devs have intended then you're sadly mistaken.

As to the author's problem, unless he's running that old Metamod version I already mentioned I doubt the plugins are the root of his issue/s.

Wow cool, I'd like to visit that server
Sorry I did forget to mention my server details, here they are:

(Dual or HT) Intel Pentium 4 3.01Ghz
    1GB RAM
    MetaMod v1.17.4.0 > AMXMODX 1.01 > Roughly 30 plugins.

We are now down to about 22 plugins still with people b*tching!
I am unsure as to the details of our internet connection but I am sure it will be in the 10gb range.

I shall pay a visit to the modNS forums as per your request. Thankx again for the replies.

Edit: We run 3 concurrent NS servers each with a max of 18 players, rarely reaching full capacity and currently the player count is 23 and the processor usage is roughly 20%. The hitreg has been an issue for a while even before we started multiple servers so I wasn't sure if this information was worth mentioning earlier but it might help in detemining the cause of said issue so I'll mention it anyway.

Totally OT but Depot does not deserve that sort of flaming, so I'm continuing anyway:

Depot has put a lot of effort into exanding the NS community. Asside from the server he runs, he also runs and posts in forums, helps out in modns, and organises community projects. (Although I'm still awating the results and public config releases of the souped-up RCBot vs WhichBot match.)

TFC/CS servers may be full of n00bs, but they serve to bridge the gap for TFC/CS players. Like it or not, we do need them to continue to grow. They will familiarise themselves with sensible upgrade orders and become proficient with handling the weapons and shooting style. These are two less skills they will need to be taught in-game by people like us.

There are plenty of servers out there with no plugins; they just tend to be empty. Go fill one up and start a player base.

You're a nice guy Swift; don't destroy your forum rep by acting like a fool.
  • DepotDepot The ModFather Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7956Members
Thanks BlueNovember, appreciate the support. As to the Battle of the Bots, when 3.0 was released it negatively affected their performance, and I never got back into re-testing. There also was a general lack of interest so I sidelined it. I do however have beefed up configs for RCBot. If you're interested pm me.

NSPWNS has recently posted on the modNS.org Forums but is now relatively certain the plugins aren't his problem. Between these 2 posts we'll try to get him fixed up.

    yes and no

the only way they can really screw with hit recognition is IF and ONLY IF it is using so much of your server CPU that the server itself is lagging behind on the calculations. Besides that, i've got nothing else to tell you from personal experience

try making a backup, try dragging all you mods off and seeing what happens, i bet you reg issues are still there, its probably a problem in your configs.

but aware that the complainers might be referingto the "last slot user issue" that effects all HL mods, the last player hit registration is utterly mess up, many server kick the last slot and keep it for player swapping, but this also stops the server being truely full and sticking someone in that "blessed" last slot.

I read something about that last slot a while back but I had completely forgotten about it, on the other hand we run AMXX and so we have reserved slots, so wouldn't that mean if enough admins join then an admin will be able in that last slot, I'll have to give that a try and see, cheers for that.

what is your server fps? check by using rcon stats in the console. I keep my servers at a constant 100 fps with no mods running but the stats at the end. no amx or anything. You should try giving your server a fps boost. If your server is fully loaded with 3 18 slots and your getting 40 fps that is terrible for registry. If anyone has any problems with registry on my server they either have inappropiate rate setup for my server or not used to playing with near perfect registry ie. aiming behind the skulk.

For the record I'll state that I like my servers alot more purist then Depot's. Nothing wrong with plugins, I just prefer them when they are adding utility to the proper game rather then making it something that it wasn't originally. It isn't a credibitlity thing, but I'd wager the vast majority of decent NS players avoid MvM strange plugins like knome and other such. Far fewer avoid 50 levels... but that's another issue entirely.

I certainly respect anyone who advocates plain vanilla servers and desires to play classic or combat as it was developed to play. On the other hand there's a huge market out there for both Metamod and AMX Mod X. The modNS.org Forums has some of the best coders to be found and some really great plugins have been cranked out.

The Gnome is not for MvM only and can be used in Combat or Classic. The idea for his creation came from an idea Yumosis posted on these forums. As with extralevels2, this plugin is totally configureable and can easily be overpowered by the server-op. He was developed as a utility player whose primary purpose is to build and repair, and whose travel is limited to x units from the cc. I have to stress again, many plugins that would actually enhance the game can easily be configured to unbalance it one way or the other ... this is why plugins normally get a bad rap.

for the guy thats ranting on about a dual P4 3 GHz, there is no such thing as a dual P4 board due to the hyperthreading architecture. you probably saw hyperthreading and assumed 2 cpus.

    anyways...

plugins are good on a server to an extent, such as adding MvM back in and putting on 50 levels with all the extra armor and helth bonuses. that i dont have a problem with. but those servers with "roll the dice", gnome and other plugins of that sort, i steer clear of. they not only horribly unbalance the game, they ruin games. who wants to see a godmode onos rampaging through marine start? or a pint sized marine (which is almost impossible to kill) flying around the hive with almost nothing aliens can do about it.

for me those kinds of servers with those plugins cause me to get frustrated and angry because you cant do anything but sit and be killed over and over again with no hope of even winning the match.
