Ns Killing Connection

ProfLiebstromProfLiebstrom Join Date: 2004-09-04 Member: 31292Members, Constellation
Ok well last few days my connection keeps dying a few minutes to a couple of hours after playing NS. Now it has started doing it seconds after I join a server.

It just just kill my connection to the whole server. It completely kills my internet connection. Can't connect to any sites etc. Only way I can get it working again is restarting modem.

Done virus scan using advanced heuristics with Norton, Avg and that new NOD. Have zonealarm firewall. Done adaware and spybot s&d scans. Defragged, chkdsked.

I am completely stumped now. Any one any ideas ?

sounds like hardware-biased probs to me... when ever my connection dies, it's always the LAN-cable. it's poor. try different HW if you have any

seems to me you better install a packetscanner, update the firewall, enable logs on it, and run logs & diagnostic tools on your modem.

If you know what the last thing is what the comp does before internet dies, yu are ahead one step

spoke too soon. did it again. although it took much longer for it to die.....

Edit: Now it's back and just as frequent.

try keeping a short pause, let the modem cool down, or try a spare, disable any software firewalls and get a hardware one, try using some other game that uses the net and does it do the same with it, reinstall NS.. can't think of any other means... start it in window mode and check task manager as it launches...

I'm sure I have had something similiar before......had tech support out. Tried 3 different modems, they buggered about with everything. And nothing fixed it until it randomly fixed itself.....

Will try leaving it a while. might be a problem with ISP....

I've been fixing a similar problem to this which keeps reccuring on my mates pc, although it affects all attempts to contact the internet. Although i haven't found a complete solution, he does have a number of things which have installed themselves onto his pc, such as 180 search assistant and a couple of other troublesome bits of adware. I keep fixing it then it keeps coming back. Personally i have narrowed it down to one website he visits. After visiting that website (bbc.co.uk) for the weather reports, the problem reccurs. After the last clear out i told him not to access that site and he no longer has any problems. This may be something that has been attached to the site, but it screws up all addresses on the internet connection, adding a www. before and a .net afterwards so no server can ever be found - e.g., type in www.naturalselection.com and it tries to connect to www.www.naturalselection.com.net. This then starts doing this immediately and causes a dns look-up error, only solved by rebooting. You may not be visiting this site, but you may well have the same problem/program/virus downloaded onto your pc. We can't track it down by any means - Anti-virus/firewall/spybot. It will not show up. It may not even relate to search assistant, but it only triggers once you have visited a certain site. Find that site and you should eliminate the problem. Either that or re-install OS to get rid of it.

this list is crap, cause you have loaded TO MUCH.

Run it again, but now before you do, do the next:

Close ALL programs (including AV, firewalls) you ARE WILLING to use. Which leaves the stuff you are not willing to use running.

Cause we can say its not good to use, but if you wanna run it, who are we to say its not good
