<div class="IPBDescription">o.O</div>So you've all already heard people going "omg omg BF2 stole the NS commandar!" (when in actuality it stole it from the same place NS did, TF2), but I ran across this shot today in the new Gamespot preview.

This is the new system they have to replace the Function key audio menus from previous BF games. You hold down a key and this menu pops up, and you can click each option:

Now where have I seen that before... :P

My Battlefield fanboy days ended with the first one really. Unless this can capture the same spirit, I don't know.

Is Natural Selection really the first game to have a heads-up mouse controlled interface?

    One of it's style, yes.

Not to mention, its obvious BF2 is implementing it EXACTLY like NS is.

...looks like EA doesn't want to rock the boat, just steal it

maybe it's a good idea and lots of places will use it or come up with it on their own. It's not that complicated to have a mouse driven menu you know...

If NS was the first game to use that, Flayra should have patented it. Software patents FTW! (Not)

It's not as if it's a bad thing this is being used, it's usefull, almost cyber ergonoic with how wasy it is to use, it's agood idea and I'd like to see it in more games.

It's all right - Perfect Dark stole it first. So did Sacrifice. Stole it, in fact, before NS was even around <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Turok was released before Perfect Dark on the N64 and Turok had a pop-up menu.

Yes they manage to mess it up. In the heat of combat, do you think it's easy to select, say "repair orders" instead of "need supplies"? I manage to do anything on the ns menu with a breeze, and I don't think of the precision needed between a slight angle or a straight line.

And "attack" in the bright center makes me not want to buy this game <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Pie menus have been around for ages and ages. No-one stole anything from anyone. Independence War 1 and 2 had them too.

Anyway great find, cant wait to install this one!!!

I much preferred the F1-8 keys over the NS pop-up menu, actually. It wasn't in the way as much, and once you learned where stuff was, it was much faster and could be done while doing something else (such as, you know, moving, looking around, shooting and other pointless stuff).
  • SnidelySnidely Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13098Members
I agree; I never found it any trouble to tap a couple of F keys to get what I wanted. The pie menu blocks the screen and is fiddly.

I hope there's an option to change it to F key mode.

Blah. There's plenty of menus designed like this in games. It's a quick and convenient setup that works well. If they had a tab for evolving, I'd say maybe there'd be an argument.

Besides, Maya had it first anyway, and a hell of a lot more intricately set up than any of these examples.

Doesnt one of those RTS games have pop-up pie menus? If not it'll make them easyer... But Ya, those NS pop-up pie menus get in the way all to often.

Sacrifice did, IIRC (and I think someone mentioned it), but it was a hell of a lot quicker to learn and use the hotkeys.

Yeah having a menu pop up when you hit a mouse button is pretty unquie. It's not like Raven Shield or Republic Commando have it...

Hhaha, the ns team is on thin ice if they want to sue anyone over copying ideas/interface design <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Not to mention that NS isn't derivative AT ALL... The Onos devour is in no way inspired by WC3's kodo beast or anything...
And wait... wall-running, leaping, biting aliens? We need Ripley, people!

There's a notable difference between borrowing and stealing ideas.

what more can strange alien creatures that are hostile to humanoids do in retaliation to their presense?

Yes, NS isn't exactly 100% unique either. A fast, small, inexpensive zergli... er, I mean skulk? A unit that can use a cloud that reduce damage for everything inside it and another cloud that reduces health? A big, slow unit that can take a lot of damage and can devour enemies? Yeah, I've never seen any of that before. If people are going to sue others for stealing ideas, I don't think there's a developer in the world that would be safe.

I don't remember how the saying goes, but it's something like: a bad developer copy, an okay one imitate, a good one borrow.

I don't really see that much of a resemblance..... It dosen't seem to have any hierarchical structure, and has simmilar commands, which are really necissairy to have somewhere. It dosen't even look all that much like the NS ones.

Lots of other programs use it though, a couple other games have simmilar pop-up menus, but the closest menu i've found is Maya's Marking Menus.
