Just when I thought the RTS genre was in decline then this news comes out. THere has got to be a god.
I am really looking forward to seeing how it really gets over the "resource war" pattern in RTS. I am getting freaking tired of playing RTS games of racing for that one resource point and losing it and the whole game with it.
Sex... Plain and simple. And is that the UK pc gamer or what? I get pc gamer and I have yet to see that <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> Anyways, my faith in pc gaming is being restored.
Finally - a game that rewards strategic thinking, not hotkey smashing!
...and those big robots look pretty cool, too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> The sea battles in TA were great, imagine what they will be like in this game with its realistically-sized battleships >:)

Here's hoping they add to the mindboggling greatness of this game with an awesome classical soundtrack.
Total Annihilation's soundtrack, like the original Star Wars, proves that the best music for Sci-fi is not techno, or rock, but classical. Most modern games overlook the power that a good classical soundtrack can bring to a game's atmosphere.
I'm listening to the soundtrack as I type (you can just put your TA CD into the computer and run a media player, should pick up the music on it). Its worth the price of the game by itself.

CN, you'll probably have to use googlehax, it really requires the pictures.

There are "resource points" but they're not mandatory to use...
There's energy produced by nuclear plants, wind power, solar power, which can be placed anywhere. Gas/thermal plants need to be placed on specific locations though.
For your second resource, metal, you can put your extractor anywhere, but using a "node" is of course better. Metallo's can convert energy into metal.
Random res points can be "consumed" by builder to instantly add res in your pool.
Therefore, even if you're better off with key locations, you don't NEED res points.
I loved the res model in TA. It was amazingly innovative too.

I didn't really like TA all that much. However I am excited at the prospect of a new RTS. In my opinion starcraft hasn't been beaten.
