I don't mind spam e-mails - that's what my Yahoo! account is for. And I've had spam involving Tom Hanks getting close to nature for a while, this is just another oppurtunity for him. But it annoys me when they fill my mailbox with "make poverty history" pamphlets. I don't mind concerts, online petitions etc., but leave my mailbox alone.

I tried to go to the website after I saw the ad on TV, but the site was completely FUBAR in both IE and Firefox. I've formatted since then, so I'll give it another go.

Africa needs to be cleansed with fire. If Tom Hanks wants to do that I’ll sign his stupid petition until then I’m still mad at him for getting the role of Robert Langdon.

Edit. I don't want to turn this into a political discussion Reasa. If you want to have a more serious discussion about Bush and poverty, take it to the Discussion forum or a political forum.
So, a warning for future posters: Please keep the topic strictly to the one campaign or I'll have the guards (Nem0 / Marik )swiftly take you away and remove your post : |

I don't understand. Why can't we have a political discussion? There is no avoiding the fact that this campaign is a political one. Nor should we beat around the bush and pretend to have naive intentions. This thread should be more open-ended than that and I think, or perhaps hope, I'm not the only one who feels that way.
Because when the topic of Bush and partisan political debate comes into play things tend to get very nasty very quickly due to the polarized nature of certain topics. This is why we have the Discussions forum for serious discussions. They are closely moderated by myself and other moderators, and contain extra rules that help prevent verbal fist fights.
I have a feeling that Merkaba was concerned with seeing support for eliminating poverty and raising awareness about the One campaign, rather than a discussion on the nature of poverty, the causes of poverty, the politics involving key leaders in aiding Africa's debt elimination, the economic independence of Africa nations or any other related topic within the idea of poverty in Africa.
However, I'd like to note that I would love to see a new thread concerning the feasability of Africa's debt elimination and the merit of committing one percent of the US budget to aid poverty stricken nations in the discussion forum where it could be more closely monitored by myself.
psssh.. bush is a badass.. cept for his relationship with terri schiavo... he must have been drunk when he said he wanted to keep her alive or something.. i know my bush wouldnt be stupid enough to attempt that sober..
I wouldn't mind things like this if a) Bob Geldoff didn't keep getting involved, I hate that man and his self righteous arrogance and b) all these celebs keep bandying around when if they all donated the money they made from just there last movie/album/whatever just the last one you could basically wipe out world debt in one fell swoop, but no, they use there faces to try and persuade us to give money.

I wasn't intending this thread to go into a discussion about the realities of whether this is a hopeless plight or not, no. The idea was merely to give people a chance to have their 'voice' regarding world poverty registered and known to the world via this campaign.
I know there are many people like me on this forum who would like to see poverty as being a thing of the past in our present, so I figured I'd show them the option to express that concern in the form of this petition Whether or not it will yield fruitful results is not something I would pretend to know much about, but it IS a possibility that it will.
Every day we have opinions on important things that rarely leave our heads. If they stay in our heads, then nothing will ever happen to resolve the issue. Let it be known to the world that you are one of many who wish to see an end to poverty and hardship for fellow humans.
