Well that slideshow wasn't too helpful and I joined a server, said I was an uber-newb, I was kicked. Is there some sort of newbie training server or some kind of tutorial? Because I don't understand how half the concepts in this game work (Like building things) and the 'help file' wasn't too helpful because it assumed I knew certain things.

Thats awful, being kick for being new. If i were u, i'll not get into that server for kicking me over being NEW. Well now...onto the thick of things.
i suggest u choose the marines until u get famiiliar with them then join aliens. The best training, ironically is to get it from playing the game itself. Heres a few pointers:
*To build, 'USE' the strcuture and dont let go until u hear its deploy sound or the green ring underneath it gets full.
*Welders repair structures and your team mates armour.
*Your right mouse button -learn to explore it inside out. Familiarise yourself with the sub-menus, because your life may depend on it.
*Never stand idle for long, ask the com to give u things to do.
*stick together. As alien, i love teaching wannabe rambos a lesson.
*Read the in-game help text. Its there for a reason. i.e point at structures and they give a description of what they do.
*cant think of anything else?
oh yes, read the game manual if u havn't....even tho it gives only a nice theretical background of the game.
I just wanted to point out also that the Welder does great point-blank damage and it is unlimited. Far better than the knife for carving up enemy resource towers/hives. I know some people claim to have popped skulks like popcorn, although I've never tried it.
Oh, and what server kicked you off for being new? Being new is the least of possible offenses, considering the game has been public for all of three weeks and people are finding out about it constantly. Unless you did something really stupid/annoying, like screaming for hmgs and then throwing them off a cliff, or actually just screaming for hmgs in general, you shouldn't have been booted.
