"A 22-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to be convicted for modifying a video games console."

When I read:

"The man had been selling modified Xbox consoles which he fitted with a big hard drive containing 80 games."

I couldn't help but wonder how much these things cost.
EDIT - They were £300

I'm not nerdy enough - I read the topic and I was like, why was this guy putting xboxes through a wood chipper, and why is it illegal?

Then again it's illegal to mod them in the first place over there

Selling it with games = no. Anything but games.

    are you sure?

I know certain aspects of moding are legal and others illegal.

Heck, I've heard that in Australia its illegal to buy cartridge adaptors for the N64. WTHmeh. First it was software with their User Licenses but slowly its creeping into hardware. You never truly own the things you buy.

I'm glad I don't live in the UK if that's the case - I have a modded Xbox sitting next to me, and I mod them myself (for a fee ).

I think it's legal if you own the game, but nothing else... No judge would convict you over using an Xecuter or EvoX BIOS (let alone XBMC or a dashboard).

actualy break, certain things ARE VERY illegal.

I atm don't remember exactly what pieces of software they were but certain things were not alowed as they were created ussing a stolen piece of xbox development stuff.

generaly it was if you installed linux you were ok, but if it then still ran xbox games that was the illegal part.

http://www.xbox-scene.com Great Xbox resource site... And yes, they use parts of the official Microsoft Xbox BIOS, which you're only able to obtain with the leaked XDK (Xbox Developer Kit).

That's the only reason why it's illegal... If you think about it though, it's like stealing a computer, only to be convicted of playing games on it.

Well, now that I read that over it doesn't make much sense, but you get the point...

What if you mod it after you buy it. What can they do?

He only has to sell 3 X-Boxes to make that cost up. Such a weak price and if I was him it wouldn't put me off doing it all over again.

they confiscated all his equipment too, which I'm sure was worth many thousands...

hope he had some money saved :o

I'm sure he could easily get the PC & Hard drives back. Any old excuse like "I'm building computers for a home network system" could be fought for.
