<div class="IPBDescription">need some help with damage control</div> So here are my symptoms.

For backstory, 2 days ago we had a power surge/outage.

Today, I get home from a concert, and my computer is off and will not turn on.

No bios beep, hard-drive spinup, nothing.
The power supply feels pretty hot.
I'm looking through the components, and the fan on my graphics card is cockeyed. I remove it to take a closer look, and I find that the plastic around the motor has melted and it is permanently fixed in place.

I'm trying to figure out the extent of the damage. How likely is it that the harddisk is ok, etc.

Also, in the event that I am really truly ****ed, what is hot in components these days? I've got plenty of money, but I don't like to spend it.

You ought to get another machine and plug and play with your different parts to find out what's busted. You need to replace the graphics card's fan for sure. Also, give a definite (or at least ballpark) budget for a new system in the event that you do have to replace your rig.

If the power supply is hot, chances are its shorted out because the insulation on the wires got fried. There might be more damage beyond the power supply, but just get a new power supply for now and see what happens. Usually when things dont work and they get really hot, their shorting out or dont have enough resistance (basicly the same idea)

Well if the power supply wont turn on I would start with replacing that. Than work from there.

DuoGodOfDeath is right, but I think this is a fatal powersurge. I had one of these exactly a year ago and it killed every component attatched to my PC except the monitor and webcam.

If a component melted in to the board there is a good chance of a power surge and all components will not work. I have heard of various instance when the HD is salvagable, you just have to test it on someone elses PC.
