Can't Start New Game?

I downloaded the full version of NS. It installs fine. I'm running a retail copy of Half Life. When i start the game from the desktop shortcut and go to new game, it starts playing the music of the multiplayer NS while regular half life actually starts as the game. (the first scene on the train with the woman talking). Then it freezes and the music just keeps playing. That song Love trap.
When I start the game from Custom mode with HL, It says it's there , fully installed and when I go to activate it the NS screen comes up but I'm not able to select new game, training or load/save. They are blacked out. The multiplayer logs in fine and I can play it with no problem. Just the game itself won't start. Anyway it sounds similar to some other problems I've read here but with a little twist. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.
