Developed by a still external third party studio, DICE. EA is making efforts to buy said studio, but they've been blocked so far.

Also, BF2 has had shoddy patch support and is riddled with bugs, including a major memory leak that prompted a patch 'recall' and reportedly was only tested on high-spec machines, meaning the 'fix' patch apparently did nothing. Not exactly a stellar product; it's selling more on name than anything else.

DICE has also joined the ranks of the 'evil empire' after hiring on Trauma studios, the Desert Combat mod team... then taking their franchise rights, shafting them $200,000 on a contract loophole, and offering them jobs in Sweden (a **** deal however 'friendly' it may sound).

EA has a history of buying studios and closing them down, retaining only the franchise. They've done this with some high profile ones, and this greatly upsets people as the results are pretty poor.

Over time, EA's older talent has migrated/jumped ship (some leaving the industry entirely out of frustration of their current conditions), leaving EA's hiring policy to fill the gaps with young naive college students and first-timers. People convince themselves that's the only way game development works and either deal with it or, again, leave the industry entirely. Thankfully I already had my offer here when a guy from there called me about openings they had.

EA's apparently hostile takeover bids against Ubisoft have put some negative light on the company as well. Ubi is a big player in the industry and it can be assumed EA is after the franchise rights to farm out to their internal studios.

But if you're going to just blame it on people being American as you do with everything else, I suppose this brief rundown won't make a difference. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's the sort of information I like. Rather than the NFL one where I can blame it on Americans.

I now understand why EA Games is badly thought upon and quite honestly I don't blame anyone for not liking them. Although being said, don't hate them for joining up with Valve. As it appears Valve wanted the deal and was not forced by EA, I'm guessing the reason EA is hated for their hostility. In this deal there appears there was none, so why are people going on and on about it? <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
If VALVe works with EA, chances are, their going to take a lot of EA's strategies- buying up small development teams(NOT MOD TEAMS. Getting a mod team is one thing, as its going from not-being-paid to being-paid), having them do a few things, then killing them off.

That is all speculation. You are just guessing that EA will make your favourite games company in to a big bad corporation.

I'm a bit of a hypocrite here but please just grow up. You don't know what Valve will do and as KFS said when starting off the topic all EA are doing is publishing the game, not working with Valve in any other way.

when we start up the games?
  • ThaldarinThaldarin Alonzi&#33; Join Date: 2003-07-15 Member: 18173Members, Constellation
DICE took on a mod team (DC) not got EA to publish their games. Valve only has contact with EA on publishing rights, if I read correctly.

If you want to discuss this further PM me as this is just spoiling the thread.

    sorry, but ea is ridicoulus...

the pump out unneeded sequels of madden, nhl, nba, fifa, nascar and whatever every year

they have one of the worst patch-support i know

they just dont care for their games
and thats why i wont buy ea games anymore

i really like bf2, but i can see how it will work
    needed patchs come late
the first addons are in planning or production

and if 1 or 2 addons are released batllefield 3 or another variation (like BF:V was to BF42) is made

this leads to community-splits and such

i wont give my money to ea

i dodnt know about that ea article, but that further shows me im right imho

I seriously can't believe this. EA already bought out all game licensing rights to the NFL and now they're teaming up with Valve. Seems kinda funny to me. Maybe EA wants to buy out Valave too?

    *raises hand*

Seriously, am I the only one who thinks this is beautiful?

EA, grandmaster of profit-runs, pays exquisite amounts of money to the creators of the most hopeful electronic distribution base on the planet. It's as though Hitler had funded the Pentagon. Sweet, sweet irony.

In case you hadn't noticed folks, Valve is independent from any publisher they might get. Whatever you think about Steam, it's bound to achieve more than enough raw profit to keep the company afloat. EA just signed away a great deal of money for rights that are, from Newell's perspective, of neglible value.
  • KungFuSquirrelKungFuSquirrel Basher of Muttons Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 103Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    <span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>DISTRIBUTION ONLY</span></span>

Valve is not suddenly the evil empire. Valve is not being bought out or owned or closed down by EA. Valve is not going to start modeling their business any differently. They're going to keep making games, keep releasing them on Steam, and use EA's distribution market penetration to keep themselves a worldwide force in gaming while they build up online distribution for those who choose to go that route.

Hell, this is how Blizzard works. They're distributed by Sierra/Vivendi/whatever their current name is this week. Does it matter? Does anyone really know? No! Blizzard is the only title on the box, because Blizzard is a force powerful enough to sell games by name alone. Same with id. Does it matter that id games are published by Activision? Does it matter that Epic games are published by Infogrames/Atari and now Midway? Valve has broken into the top echelon of independent technology-licensing developers, and they control their own destiny now. Even better, they're using their position to bring other developers into their model - the "uplift" concept (see Sin: Episodes, giving Ritual a shot at the direct-to-developer pay model).

People need to settle the hell down. I posted this because I thought it was interesting and surprising. Why surprising? Valve had signed a multi-title deal with Activision, so most people just wrote it off that when it came time to re-distribute, it'd be under the ATVI banner. Why interesting? I wouldn't have expected Valve to go with EA or EA to go with Valve (given their stance on M-rated games).

In the end, though, it makes sense. However much you hate EA, they <i>are</i> the market leader, and they have more marketing oomph and presence than most other publishers combined. Half-Life will be everywhere. And Steam will be installed on every one of those PC installations.
