Winxp Network Connections: Packets Sent And Receiv

<div class="IPBDescription">How can they change if you have no conn?</div> Last week my bro called me with computer problems, sounding basically like a poor internet connection.

We go to Network Connections and do a Status on his connection - it shows packets being sent and received but <b>HE HAD NO INTERNET CONNECTION!</b>

How was this possible?

Was his network cable plugged in? If so then that could mean that its a problem on his ISP's end that just wont let him disply web pages but still gets net traffic.

Yeah I think i've had similar... 'difficulties' Depot. Whenever i lose connection with my ISP winxp pops up with a little "limited network activity" icon thing, and when i check my firewall i can see about 3 bytes moving back and forth to... somewhere.... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yep, localhost. A number of programs do use the loopback function.

What sort of programs use the loopback function and why?

    Interesting on the loopback.

To confirm you have no internet connection then, would the best method be to ping a remote ip? *note* I can tell on my own computer, but I was troubleshooting my bros 200 miles away, and he's computer illiterate.

start>run>command then ping "iphere" if no response his connection is either being blocked by a firewall/xp or its borked

BulletHead, you need to type in "ping iphere", not just "iphere". For future reference, if you hold Alt when you push PrintScrn, it will only capture the active window, rather than your whole screen, eliminating the whole process of cropping the window.

    Erm....

it could be false. IE, what if your PC is trying to recconect the the isp/go to a webpage/contact spyware stuff? It will obviously try to send out packets, thus, changing the readout on the window...

    Um... more accurately, it's <span style='font-family:courier'>ping <i><ip address></i></span>. As in <span style='font-family:courier'>ping localhost</span> or <span style='font-family:courier'>ping 127.0.0.1</span>.
