The thread wasn't very clear until I asked why he was doing it. I thought it was garbage at first sight. So I asked him, albeit not nicely, why he was telling us this.
Now, if it was, "Blown PSU kills video card", I might have been more amiable.

Here are some of the pics.
The old burnt fan. <img src='http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rmoulton/maintenance/fan.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
The front with the new fan tied on. <img src='http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rmoulton/maintenance/front.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
The back with the new fan tied on. <img src='http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rmoulton/maintenance/back.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
A top view in the case. <img src='http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rmoulton/maintenance/top.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
These fans connect straight into the power supply, no motherboard mount needed. The power supply I've got this running on was from the days when ATX was a new thing, and they needed to ensure backward compatibility. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So I just attached a full fledged cpu heatsink and fan from probably pentium II era. It was a **** and a half, and it still isn't as secure as I would like it. I'm going to go try ns now, and I hope it isn't as choppy.
edit: ns just froze. Apparantly my nvidia driver just got into an infinite loop. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I used to need to hang the PSU for my old work computer out of the window (15th floor, too) to stop it crashing. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

How disappointing.
When you need more fans because the original cooling equipment died on you, it may be time to upgrade. Or atleast buy a new HS/fan that's actually designed for your card. But nice hack anyway.
--Scythe-- <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> I've now actually coopted that technique too. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I don't think my original design was providing enough cooling. I refitted my heatsink using a different series of knots, and redid the thermal paste. I think it is working a lot better now.
Suggestion to anyone attaching a heatsink. Put a very thin layer of your paste on BOTH the heatsink and the surface of the chip. It seems to be making for much better heat transfer, even though I had to jiggle the heatsink around a bit.

Man, I tried fixing the problem temporarly, and I beat you Scythe, but I don't have my camera on me to prove it. As soon as I get it, I'll post a picture.

My power supply died. It took the fan on my graphics card with it. Since this computer is probably on its last days, I decided to replace them both with random parts from a shop that refurbishes pcs. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Nice jorb! Looks supremely makeshift.
