Longhorn's Opm Protocol

A little disturbing
Saw the link on the OCForums and I just read this on Engadget. I have to say it seems a little disturbing to me. Basically, Microsoft is pusing this OPM standard for it's COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol). Basically, it will render all monitors that don't support the OPM or HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) obsolete. If you try and use a monitor that does not support either of those standards, you get a little black screen stating that your monitor does not comply with the OPM standard. Good times to be had for all. THis is just one of the reasons that I'm staying away from Longhorn.

The people on the OC Forums were saying the exact same thing. This is a dort of call-to-arms for hackers. I garuntee that it will only take a couple months after Longhorn is released to hack it and get rid of this stupid protocol. ZeroByte is right on this one. We consumers are really getting shafted badly here. This DRM crap that's plaguing the entertainment industry is really causing more problems than it's trying to solve. Hackers on the net are already preparing to do something about new DRM implements in upcoming products. People aren't just going to stand aside and take it, Microsoft's OPM standards amd the entertainment industry's DRM standards aren't going to be accepted without a fight.
They'll probably 'optimize' the code so it 'works better' and checks what OS you run to make sure you run longhorn. At least for their products. I can't install MP10 on Win2k already.
Say woot? bought? hehe.
I wont get into the discussion of how long that will take either.
But yer i have to agree with the general opinion the monitor of all things is the last i replace and i dont wish to be forking out hundreds for a new monitor and OS.
All things being perfect i would still be using Win98 or if i had the time and effort Linux. Having to upgrade your OS every few years and fork out hundreds because companys will no longer support older OSes is anoyying at best.
I've heard similar things that if anything Longhorn reduces functionality. There's been a lot of complaints from beta testers that the functionality and stuff really sucks.

since WHEN has MicroSucks ever listened to their beta testers?
They are in league with monitor manufacturers!
Like most people say, a monitor is the very last thing you will ever upgrade on a yearly basis and even if you did upgrade, its only because your monitor finally went kaput or the screen starts to act funny beyond repair.
So monitor manufacturers want to get a quick jump in their profits by forcing PC users to upgrade their monitors with the help of M$.
Isn't Microsoft saying to us the consumers that don't have OPM-compatible monitors that,
"Your current monitor is prone to illegal activities. Please get one that will do our bidding"
And if the reports are anywhere near accurate, there's no way I'm "upgrading" to Longhorn any time soon. In fact, I'm not visiting Window Update for a long time. I don't trust them not to **** up XP intentionally (for a change).
This only applies to OPM protected media.
The only time you're going to see this is when you're watching "Premium content" from some company stupid enough to enable this and they're most likely to choose the "blurry" option.
Well apparently that's the only good upgrade in Vista, the visuals. And at that, they aren't much different than XPs. Example:

It actually looks even more like XP now. The sidebar is just completely gone. Just a new skin, smaller (for some stupid reason) minimize/maximize/close buttons, and stupidly stupid transparency effects thrown around like it was colored lighting in Quake 2.
Here's a gallery (complete w/ some crappy videos) here
but what i wanted to say was instead of breaking longhorn + monitors, the simple solution is to rip the media from their protected medium and re-record it elsewhere. if longhorn doens't think it's secure media you won't have problems. if you can read it you can rip it
So it's like Windows 95 to 98?
You know, after they made XP I figured Microsoft would keep going up. As cool as some of the Loghorn stuff looks, ultimately I and most people use the computer/operating system for other programs, not so I can tinker with translucency, and those that like staring at visual effects should've convereted to Mac a while ago.
Now about this Google OS I've heard rumor about...
