You'll notice that the weapons in most console FPS games are horribly innacurate to compensate for the fact that they're hard to aim with, as you can pretty much just spray and pray and only need to be pointing in the enemy's rough direction.
Case in point, Halo rifle, killzone rifles (both ISA and Helghast). Kthxbye.
yeah the pistol, rocket launcher and sniper rifle in halo are totally inaccurate... oh wait :p
Using 1 weapon to exemplify a whole game is bad nil, especially when it's not a-typical of the selection.
The rifle is pretty tragic at long range because of it's spread; anyone who can aim worth a snot with the pad uses other stuff. In single player I kept the rifle to hand because while it was wildly inaccurate it was easy to find ammo for; the shotgun was my backup for when I needed something dead, fast. I often found myself throwing the rifle for a sniper though whenever I got the chance; luckily it was easy to replace when the snipe finally ran out of it's precious ammo though :3
In multiplayer not many people bother with the rifle instead relying on the hyper-accurate pistol or snipe for headshots, the rocket launcher for power or the shotty for close up maiming. Some also use the charge up convenent weapon because it packs a heck of a bunch when it's fully up, but again that's a fairly accurate weapon and doesn't have much, if any, splash damage. You need a decent aim to do most of the trick shots that make the nades so much fun too :D

Games should be judged on a game-by-game basis, not by which platform they are on. All this yapping on about how console fps games would be better with a mouse is pure conjecture, since we can't find out one way or another (exception being things like Halo PC). It is stupid to play through a game thinking that, when you could be enjoying it.
Consoles are great for traditional "beat em up" type games. Here you don't need the extra levels of control and key functions that are possible with a PC. Of course playing using your TV just adds to the whole package of things like Mortal Kombat/Tekken etc.
PCs though in general I would rate better for the FPS. As others have mentioned there is really no substitute for the range of motion possible with a mouse. Although I imagine with games that are slower paced and more like millitary simulators this probably wouldnt be as much of an issue.
Thats not to say that people cannot achieve a high-level of skill with console controllers...but I'd be willing to put $ on an uber Mouse+Keyboard vs Console stick player anyday (note the fine print: <b> provided there is no goofy autoaim feature enabled </b>).
My console based FPS experience is somewhat limited, but playing Max Payne for example was 10X better on a PC.
Edit: Now that think about it, probably my only major gripe really with Console FPS is the ridiculous autoaim features.

You have to admit, weapons in console games are GENERALLY less accurate than their PC counterparts. You're not going to be getting super accurate headshots too often using a controller unless you've had a lot of practice. This is why the console version of half-life had a lock-on feature; because you just couldn't aim the half-life assault rifle without it.
You can't deny that IN GENERAL, weapons in console FPS games are less accurate than in PC FPS games. This doesn't make them "kiddy" or simplified, its just the way they are, and the way they have to be because the makers know the user is going to be using a controller. You'll also notice that both Halo and Killzone (arguably the 2 most popular console FPS's) have a melee button. Again, the developers know what they're working with. Once an enemy gets up-close, it can be hard to quickly turn, aim and fire with a controller, but much easier to face their general direction, press the melee button and whack them in teh faec. And its more fun too.
So to summarise, console games are not inferior to PC games, PC games are not inferior to console games, they're just different. Kthxbye.
*edit* Twoflow, I could equally say where are the console Half-life 2's, Doom 3's, Deus Ex's, Starcraft's, Command and Conquers and World of Warcrafts? Consoles are unsuitable for strategy games and FPS's, just as PCs are unsuitable for racing, platform and beat-em-ups. Yes you get the odd exception, but the general rule is PC for depth and strategy (and FPS's), console for action and fun. Which is why I play both.
<!--QuoteBegin-Nil IQ+Aug 2 2005, 12:38 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Nil IQ @ Aug 2 2005, 12:38 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->*edit* Twoflow, I could equally say where are the console Half-life 2's, Doom 3's, Deus Ex's, Starcraft's, Command and Conquers and World of Warcrafts?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Don't get me wrong, they're all excellent (except Doom 3). I'm pointing out that consoles gamers have access to games that PC players can't enjoy, and as you point out, vice versa.
But you can't say that Halo 2's battle rifle is inaccurate, even if, in general, console games' weapons are less accurate. As you said, though, this isn't a bad thing.
You've yet to give any real evidence of your belief that they're less accurate in general or otherwise. You just keep saying it is without any genuine proof of your claim nill :/ I look at the weapon arsenals available in games on both platforms and quite frankly I think you're fooling yourself.
As I said already; the learning curve for using a controller is faaaar steeper on FPS than it is for mouse and keyboard; that's why you're having trouble sniping. Once you get over the rather rocky hill, it's not really any more challenging than using ye olde m+k. The only downside is the lack of buttons to bind fun functions to :3
As for the melee button in halo... no. The melee button is there because changing weapons just to hit someone in the face with the back of the gun you're already armed with sorta comes under the 'stupid' category :p I've always wanted FPSes to have a 'melee' button because I honestly don't see the point in getting out a knife when you're perfectly capable of cracking them over the head with your rifle, kicking them in the face or deploying the elbow! It's also a lot more satisfying cutting through a crowd in melee and shooting at the same time without fiddling with your weapon selection :3 In spite of that, though, you covered the core reason the melee button is there in the last two words of that lengthy paragraph; "It's fun".
If you had trouble turning quickly, aiming and firing then you'd never get past the flood levels in halo (as annoying as they were). Melee in there will get you killed; the devs made them not flinch from melee blows just for that purpose... as you said, they know what they're working with ^~
I haven't played killzone so maybe I'm not seeing one of the prime games that's colouring your ideals but I've played goldeneye, perfect dark, turok 2, turok rage wars, quake 3, halo and probably a good few I've forgotten about and that's what I'm basing my stance off. I also played all of them with auto-aim off whenever it offered the option :p
at least you realise that the platforms are merely different rather than 'better' or 'worse' :3
oh and kthxbye? It's not a good thing to say in posts; it's almost like self character assassination :s
I've seen some really amazing players play fps's on consoles and had some frantic and fun times playing the games. A mate of mine is a very good gamer and addicted to his xboxlive. However he will readily admit that no matter how good a shot he is and however many times he hits the top spots, he couldn't even begin to dream of doing some of the things he see's in a PC fps.
Twoflow, a pc gamer may buy less games on average, however a pc gamer also tends to dedicate far more time to a game than a console player does. You can put far more effort in to a pc game and so you can get far more reward. Just look at halflife with all of its maps and mods, its community. I've seen tekken obsessed ps-heads that have entered the odd tournament and so forth but in the end they can never ascend to the level of dedication an evercrack or WoW player can hit.
You get out of games what you put in and you can devote more time, more thought and more effort to a pc game than you ever could to a console game (despite the 1 in a million exceptions I'm sure that could be pulled out of the wood work).

I want to see Halo world champs try to beat CS CPL world champs, each using their respective controller setups. I'm not sure how it could be set up, but I think it would definately be a fun event.

Unless you want to see how far you can make a grunt fly of course <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Don't get me wrong, they're all excellent (except Doom 3). I'm pointing out that consoles gamers have access to games that PC players can't enjoy, and as you point out, vice versa.
But you can't say that Halo 2's battle rifle is inaccurate, even if, in general, console games' weapons are less accurate. As you said, though, this isn't a bad thing.
It's really not worth arguing over.
You've yet to give any real evidence of your belief that they're less accurate in general or otherwise. You just keep saying it is without any genuine proof of your claim nill :/
I look at the weapon arsenals available in games on both platforms and quite frankly I think you're fooling yourself.
As I said already; the learning curve for using a controller is faaaar steeper on FPS than it is for mouse and keyboard; that's why you're having trouble sniping.
Once you get over the rather rocky hill, it's not really any more challenging than using ye olde m+k. The only downside is the lack of buttons to bind fun functions to :3
As for the melee button in halo... no. The melee button is there because changing weapons just to hit someone in the face with the back of the gun you're already armed with sorta comes under the 'stupid' category :p
I've always wanted FPSes to have a 'melee' button because I honestly don't see the point in getting out a knife when you're perfectly capable of cracking them over the head with your rifle, kicking them in the face or deploying the elbow! It's also a lot more satisfying cutting through a crowd in melee and shooting at the same time without fiddling with your weapon selection :3
In spite of that, though, you covered the core reason the melee button is there in the last two words of that lengthy paragraph; "It's fun".
A really viable solution to console FPS and RTS.
EDIT: Is there one? God damn, if there isn't, I should run to the patent office right now.

I thought I saw one on a logitech joypad. Or that could have been a photoshopped one.
I mean seriously, the right analog stick could be replaced by a trackball. I don't see any existing games being affected.

You got me here, but one could argue that Final Fantasy 11 (PS2) fills that role, since they're all the same stupid game anyway.

Very uncomfortable to have to constantly roll a ball to move the camera, I much prefer just holding a stick in.
How can you have trouble, when it's not possible to turn fast?
Turned fast enough for me.
Unless you're talking about metroid... samus turns like a 2000 ton tank ¬.¬
Well yeah but outside of metroid it's never really been slow enough to bother me :o
