Balance? It's So Hard To Tell.

After extensive play yesterday I noticed a few things about this game. If both teams are somewhat competent you can have some very satisfying and enjoyable games. If either sides is even a bit below average in skill, then it's murder. There seems to be no "middle ground". It's funny, as soon as I'm convinced the game is balanced, I play on a server where one side or the other gets mauled, which always leads to yells of "The (Marines/Aliens) don't stand a chance in this game!" I supposed this indicates balance in its own way. You can easily slaughter the otherside if they are clueless.

Despite that, most games I play on and whether or not a certain side dominates, during the post-game break (Ready Room), there's never really any hard feelings. That's what I like about this mod, the community, not so much as getting shot and trash talking how the "Unleet Newbie" got lucky and you were beating the bishop at the time as it is spent communicating with your teammates and cooperating, a tandem attack in two different locations across the map is a beautiful thing to see.

The best games are with a small leavening of experienced players on each side. The newer players tend to actually listen instead of trying to act like big shots and that's great. No one's going to be "The Best" at NS, everyone has something to learn. If you're clueless, ask a question, the majority of the players probably won't get on your case and insult you about it. As it is, skill is the determining factor, so work on that technique!

Ive probably said this before, but remeber when CS was unbalanced?

Thats how NS is now. Give it some time. In the mean time, we should learn some new strategies.

the game is still in its beta stages, and its very balanced at such an early stage. cant wait for the patches.

i think the 2 server patches have both balanced it out quite well. You can definately win as either side. All we need now are the annoying bugs and exploits to be eradicated, but that will come with time.

NS is in beta stage? I don't think so Tim. This is version 1, and for good reason. All the betatesting was done in private by the playtesters.

In the last few days i've noticed a sizable improvement in the number of marine wins i've seen, which is good. I'd say its about 3 alien wins to 1 marine win at this point. Flayra says the new patch is 'imminent', which should lock in more and more balancing factors (armor fix, explosives working, etc). It certainly feels like NS is getting more balanced.

I really think the explosives fix will be a kick in the teeth to the entire NS playstyle. Marine last stands in particular will be a thing of the distant past.
