That's the only source I can find, but if it's true, there's really not a whole lot I can say. :|

He was doing what he loved, although it is very sad, I know that when its my time, I hope to be doing what I love at that moment.

I'm guessing he lay on the bottom, ontop of the ray, as its the only way I can think of one of these animals attacking, being that they are hard to be angered, even if attacked. Like a bee, a last effort to get away.

This may be a bit too philosophical for an internet post, but...I can't imagine what must've been flying through his mind in the moment he got stung. He's risked life & limb often during his job(s), so it's something he & his family must've thought about or discussed in the past. But now that this has actually happened...

He was an enthusist, and not many people can understand him -- for example, when he brought his baby into a croc pin -- you have to remember, he was raised around crocodiles, and had his hands on them at age 5, trapping them in his teens near populated areas for free to expand his parents zoo.

He will be missed. It's sad when such an icon leaves the world.

It's also worth noting, I think, that his wiki page expanded from just 3 entries to over 10. It's kind of sick how only in death he got recgonized in certain places.

One of the news reports I read said that he was swimming over the ray, when it striked.

They also protected the page on stingrays from vandalism.

I was thinking about this when I woke up.

In a world where human life seems to be so cheap, I think a barb to the heart is much more dignified than say a piece of lead ripping through a part of your body. I think, really, he died doing what he loved and I don't think if he would choose any other way, if forced to choose.
  • Garet_JaxGaret_Jax Join Date: 2003-02-23 Member: 13870Members, Constellation
Think of his kids though. His youngest is almost 3 (IIRC) and will grow up without his biological father. You have to take responsibility as a parent.

from that same point of view, he ensured their well being by working hard and becoming an idol in a sense.

only the good die young... And getting killed by those effing things is about the same than hitting the lotto... RIP

apparently he pulled the barb out of his heart before he went. and he wanted the tape to be shown.

That was actually a mistake. If something large gets lodged in your torso, your best bet is to leave it there, because it'll stop the bleeding.

Mantrid's right, removal is best left to the doctors.
  • CrotalusCrotalus Join Date: 2003-12-02 Member: 23871Members
Yeah, but think about from his point of view. If you happened to be stabbed with something, which happens to hurt alot (Is it all stingrays or only some that have poison?) your first inclination is going to be to get it out. I don't really think many people would be able to rationally think about their situation if they have just been stabbed in the chest. What really annoys me about his untimely death is that the stingray stabbed him right in the heart. Anywhere else and he would've had a very high chance of survival. Death by stingray is extremely rare compared to the other creatures Steve has faced before...
  • MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
Yeah, you won't be thinking rationally, but if you know ahead of time that you aren't supposed to remove something like that, which is something you would expect Irwin to know, then you probably wouldn't take it out.

'Tis indeed a sad day. When I first heard he'd been killed by a stingray barb I couldn't understand how... the barbs are serrated a bit and slightly poisonous, but to think he was stabbed though the chest. That's a one in a billion.

    <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    --Scythe--

P.S. Peter Brock died the other day too, but he was old and not very famous anymore. Oh well.
  • AldarisAldaris Join Date: 2002-03-25 Member: 351Members, Constellation
Mantrid, in this case, pulling the barb out was probably a good thing, given that the venom causes cramps, not exactly the thing you want lodged in your heart. Removing it will limit the exposure to the venom, possibly a reason why he did it.
  • MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
Yeah, but also leaves a giant gaping hole gushing blood. I'd rather take the venom.

And evidently removing the barb was not the best course of action.
  • FremanFreman Join Date: 2005-06-19 Member: 54227Members, Constellation
wen a stingray stings you your sopposed to pull it out but yes it is one in a billion for it went throught his heart. if it had gone through anywhere else he would have been fine.

Reminds me of NetHack, where sometimes you can get killed by sheer misfortune no matter how mighty a hero you are. Poor *******. Yeah he was a bit embarassing to the rest of us Australians, but he was a good guy.
