Make the pixelation go away!
I'm experiencing some major graphic related problems when starting and playing natural selection.
Firstly I'm running:
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
1k Ram
Directx 9.0c
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
Drivers: Catalyst 06.9
My starting problem is that I can only run natural selection and from what I can tell all steam games from a 800/600 resolution on direct 3d. Otherwise the game will start up but the entire screen will be pixelated and discolored to the point were I cant make out the menu's/text. My second problem which may just be due to my inability to change config numbers as well as I used to, is that I get 50-60 fps max (20-30 when the action starts). I set max_fps 100 although I seem unable to reach the 100 mark which is hampering my play.
I'm confused why this has become a problem for me, I believe it to be directly caused by either directX or my drivers as I used to play natural selection with near 100fps and any resolution on OpenGl. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />

As for your problem, it sounds like a driver problem, and those can be tricky to fix. I've had friends with completely garbled screens on NS, and manually setting the width and height helped them. So put "-width 1024 -height 768" in the launch options for NS and see if that lets it run. Also realize that NS is optimized for OpenGL, so try and set that as well, through the menu. I don't know how to force OpenGL in the launch options.
If that doesn't help, try reinstalling your Catalyst drivers, even though you're already using the latest version. Then try downgrading the drivers. If nothing helps, you may have to take the deep plunge:
Formatting your computer
I've had friends with other driver issues at various times, and nothing we did seemed to help short of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows. Getting your programs and settings back in place is always a pain, so I hope it doesn't have to come to that.
Half-life is natively opengl, the directx (dx 5?) modes it uses may not be fully a part of directx 9.0c, or cat 6.9's.
You could also make sure your page file is not system managed, and the starting size and ending sizes are the same, which saves it getting fragmented all over the place.
You could try getting catalysts from when your card was still in production.
I wish I could do that with my Mobility9600.
I even have 2gb RAM...
First off, you probably mean to say that you have 1 Gibibyte (1GiB) of ram instead of 1 kilobyte of ram :-P

Last time I checked, standard word for 1,000,000,000bytes is a "Gigabyte".
*bibyte is used by no one.

I think the use of the nonstandard word was intentional, hence the link so people could figure out what it meant.
