Having problems with maintaining a constant fps.

About a month or two ago, I was able to run NS at a constant 100 frames per second.

Then, one week it all started going to hell. I get 40 fps in the readyroom with nobody in it, and around 5-20 when something is moving in front of me.

Here's the finer details:

Tested with both my old settings and a fresh install of NS
Absolutely no viruses or spyware
The graphics card is a Radeon 9600, it's a little over a year old
Nothing is overheating
2.53 GHz with 512 MB of RAM

I run CS at 100 fps (150 with developer 1 in the console)
I run WoW just fine, hardly any graphical lag
I get better and more constant fps playing HL2 on Medium settings.

I may not check this quickly, so if I don't respond right away, PLEASE email me at mtgmasta@gmail.com or through AIM at PhillyColeStyle.

Thanks.

Anything special you have running with NS?
Because it sounds like something is eating your CPU.

Maybe check the sound settings, and check that you're running OpenGL, and not D3D (although the difference in FPS with those specs should be negligible..and one shouldn't be much worse than the other because I have near the same specs)

If you don't have other software running, then I highly suspect sound drivers. See if more CPU is being delegated to System rather than HL.EXE in Task Manager.

<i>Anything special you have running with NS?</i>

Nope, same thing with my old installation of NS (Knife gaming pack and such) and a fresh installation after I uninstalled and deleted the whole NS folder.

<i>Maybe check the sound settings, </i>

What, in particular, should I be looking for? Sound quality, A3D/EAX Support? What should those be at?
Sound Quality is high and A3D/EAX support is off.

<i>and check that you're running OpenGL, and not D3D</i>

    It's in OpenGL

    <i>then I highly suspect sound drivers. </i>

I'll see if those need to be updated. I made sure my graphics card drivers were up to date. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

While NS is idle, it is second on my 'CPU' tab, just below 'System Idle Process'. Hl.exe uses about 11 and SIP uses about 87. As far as memory usage, it is 9th on the list. Svchost is using 29,372, aston.exe is using 14, 208, and steam is using 10, 960. Those are the only processes taking over 10,000k.

Meh...seems to be fine. Also, take note that idle is taking more CPU because you don't have HL.exe in focus (meaning, the active window)

If the stats are like that if it IS active window...then the priority on hl.exe is too low (it should be at least normal)

Haven't mentioned this yet, but have you checked the command line options? (it's the Set Launch Options button in the properties window which you can access by right-clicking NS on your Steam game list)

Also, trying running regular Half-Life singleplayer/deathmath, and check your stats with that.

If all else fails...I think a look into the registry is needed.

I have simliar problems. I use developer 1 most of the time, but it makes no real difference.
If I'm sitting in the RR, I have 124.9fps, but if a bunch of marines come back from a hard fought game, it's almost cut in half.
I don't know if all these 125 to 55fps dips (in combat, with all the action, no way I can keep 100 or more fps) effect my rego, but its hard to hit things that are moving in a straight at me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skulk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::skulk::" border="0" alt="skulk.gif" />

I have an Athlon 2800+, 1GB of PC3200 RAM and a 9800 Pro 128mb (the cooling in my case is quite good, and I have an iceberg on my 9800). Latest drivers for everything.
In a last ditch effort, I took the day for a long hardly needed format. Didn't help one bit.

My mouse is a lot less smooth at 55fps than it is at 125fps :<

Both cases make sure adaptive anti aliasing isnt on, or if you prefer it on, its set to performance. Also catalyst AI to standard, and that triple buffering and forcing of 24bit Z-buffer depth are off.

In SMARTGART, set all options to on, if it causes instability, set fastwrites off.

When you say all drivers, you are including motherboard drivers? There are always two sets you can try, Motherboard Manufacturers drivers and Chipset Manufacturers drivers. I prefer chipset ones.

    Beyond that I don't know.

@DarKrO, before I upgraded I had your exact system, but with a 9700pro, I can't recall it ever having issues with half-life based games. I know that doesn't help any, it was more of a useless info bit >_> And, if your updaterate is too high for the lower FPS it will affect you, as you will lose all that information in transfer. You have a 70fps drop, if you half it, and add your lowest fps to it (55+35) meaning 80 is your top line updaterate to take the least hit, with probably 50 - 60 being best if your fps is constantly at the low end.

Hmm thanks for that, I'll keep my updaterate lower.
I'll just live with this setup until I get a better AMD/NVIDIA rig sometime next year.
