Sound causing fps drop and raise ping

As title says, when people talk during NS on the mic, especially when its two or more people at the same time (and even worse, during battles) my ping shoots up and my fps drops dramatically. Or when there is 5+ hmgs being fired at the same time

Normally, I do not have any fps problems except during these inncidents. My ping is the lowest out of the whole server usually, my fps is "ok" I believe.

Not sure what specs you want me to say, but if its sound card related I use sound blaster live

you can mute them and then not have need to waste your bandwidth with their noises. *shrug*

(warning: it might also be crucial instructions that you need to hear, so be wise about it)

Tried that but its rather bothersome, also that doesn't help with the spammage of hmgs being fired at once (rather not mute everything entirely heh)

Not much of an idea, but try setting net_graph 3 on your console. You should see some information running on the lower right corner of your screen while playing. Check if choke or loss is skyrocketing while the problem occurs. If one or both do, the problem might be your connetion (probably not going to happen though)

Any problems with other games or anything like that?

Try updating your direct X and drivers and ect.

Also, try picking up a different cheap sound card, there like 10 bucks online now... Whats ur spec's, could be something else... Also try updating other drivers, Gfx and sound card.

Tried all that, nothing so far...

I am noticing my choke shooting up too during those times causing me to slide and not react to my mouse until after a moment, but my ping is the lowest constantly until all these people start to talk or too much gunfire

The "sliding" while shooting sounds familiar. The latest hl engine update caused some keyboard/mouse issues and hasn't been fixed yet.

Not really sure if your problems are related to the update, but I guess its better than nothing.

    You could try these:

    1. Record while playing. ("record <the name of the demo>" in your console right after joining a server. "Stop" to stop the recording. )

You might want to overwrite or delete the previous recordings as they may take quite a lot of disk space after a while.

    2. Drop the priority of hl.exe ( ctrl alt del while ns is running to bring up the processes)

More about the bug in hl engine:

Try the audigy drivers for your sound card, since the SB Live!5.1 has no new drivers since 2002 or something, I tried the audigy ones, windows didn't like it much while installing them, but they worked fine with the card.

Also make sure your motherboard drivers are installed, and you are not using default windows chipset drivers.

Wouldn't worry too much about the ati drivers, any of the 10 released this year work pretty much exactly the same on older models (I was looking for the best working ones for my card too)
