I liked 1.04 clan matches alot, just because they always erupted in epic battles via lerk/gorge rushes and then jp rushes into hives with tons of oc's/dc's. You dont really see any of those types of things anymore, now its more about map control via players then any static defenses. (Static defense was only used because it was near impossible for aliens to map control early game).
Although people claim 1.04 was the best, I think NS has always changed for the better in each of the patches. There has been plenty of bug fixes and feature additions throughout the patches, to make the game appealing each time. If they left the game finished at 1.04 it wouldn't have half the playerbase it has now.

My first game was on a 1.03 server and i didn't like it much then all the servers upgraded the next day to 1.04 and things went from there.
My longest game was on nothing and it lasted about 5 hours and was the best game i have ever had. The longest i have had on v3 was about 1 1/2 hours but there was no where near the action of the 1.04 days.
It was so much fun abusing maps with KMART and WALMART back in 1.04. Comm chair inside of the engine exhaust room outside feedwater + alttab = 24hour game. Build and jump in through wall, phasegates also worked but then aliens would know that youre there and gg isn't that far off from there.
I wish i played around then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> i only started in the late versions of 2.X
but i love <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" />
I played for the first time on a version earlier than 1.04, but I couldn't get the menus to work, so I quit playing. I reinstalled it later when it was 1.04. I loved that version. The long games were the best, I <i>really</i> miss them. (and babblers)
Meh, I'd love to see RFK get removed. I loved those hour long epic struggles. Why RFK was placed in, I'll never understand. If some clanners want faster games, add the option for THEM, rather than screwing what 99% of NS is - pubbers. Right now, if a team has an advantage, it'll stay like that for however long the 20 minute game is. I loved games, where you have hives going up and down, onoses and fades dying and spawning left and right. It was intense. Now, we have faster, yet crappier games. I don't remember f4ing as much as I do these days. But I guess NS devs could care less for the pubber.
Yeah, the 1 1/2 - 2 hour long game I had on hera was a lot more stressful than the long 4 hour games of 1.04. 3.1 is really quite fast paced. It allows things to change more dynamically and suddenly, which is great imho. It encourages communication. The long game on hera was an example of that. Everyone was giving information, listening to alien movements, just sheer teamwork. In 1.04 I got the sense that, because of no RFK, people would just kinda wonder about killing aliens until the commander did a huge rush. On the alien side, I just remember babblers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

and high resflow for the gorges <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> They could actually build stuff and hold areas with their structures. And of course the alien class locked into the 1, 2, 3 hives. "they have fades, hive 2 is up!!!" or OMG ONOS!!! RUN!!! (the big hippo aint scary no more)
I remember that 1.03 you didn't +use the pg but just stepped on it and got teleported? and aliens could use the pg to (bug)... It did however had a much better rts gameplay (1.04) then the current ns, of course it had bugs. But they could be fixed better then removing this classic gameplay (classic ain't classic no more it has combatized a little to much).
Ah the good old days <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Haha are you sure about that? A lot of games I play when an onos shows up the first thing you hear is "ONOS!!".
heh, been here since before it was released. I remember the server files being released early and modding it so I could walk around and walk around the empty maps and being awestruck at how awesome they were.
The first games I played of it on the net were slightly buggy, but wow, it was an experience no other game had given =) Unique would be a good word for it.
and haha, yes, I remember the WoL, used to love playing aliens. What a sense of teamwork, hanging out with a gorge somewhere while he built defense chambers, waiting for some marine to come along for you to eat up and then hanging around talking and healing yourself =)
Does "breaks" count? I've been around since it was released for the first time...and yeah, I remember the good old 1.04 days - and I do wish that some of those old features from that time would come back - such as epic battles etc.
Course, you can still get those in this latest version but that sort of requires two very skilled and dedicated teams.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Oh wow, I completely forgot about the Wall of Lame.

Its not like we were all idiots and couln't figure out GLs and seige.
Wall of Lames are still pretty effective...not just overkill effective like before. If a wall of lame forces the marines to siege it to pass it, then it's served it's purpose already. Sieging isn't that cheap after all.
I've been around since the very first day! I didn't even have enough of a life at that poitn to be at a halloween party on halloween! it's all gone downhill from there..
anyway, yah, been there for the epic games, those were the days, I may be one fo the few hastezone players left around, for those of ya'll that remember that server. after a hiatus(strangely coinciding with the down-ness of the forums) i've come back to the game, playing when I can(and can't), trying to be cool.
oh, and ue guys, sure i remember ya'll, that was back in the days of [TMM] I believe when I played as immortal-1...never made a real good clanner, though :-/

Actually, Kharaa using PGs wasn't a bug. It was simply changed so that only Marines could use them... a negative change IMO, because it removed the reverse-rush and made ninja-PGs much more viable.. you didn't have to guard them any more, as before.
RFK slightly made sense in the old model, with Gorges getting a lion's share of the res. I still hold that Marines never should have ended up with it though. They already have a communal res pool.
And the Walls of Lame were awesome back in the day, especially when it was first ruled that it was legal to block elevator shafts with them, and if they were purely DCs a single siege couldn't clear them all. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> Adding the neccessity to sight a siege target only made it better. After all, if Marines can weld, the Kharaa should be able to overgrow. Was great to block off the main rush-approach to the left hand hive on Eclipse with a WoL and just sit there as a Gorge while your OCs up top scored kills, just going crazy with healspray to supplement the DCs. No one bothered with the GLs, Marines just whined about how unfair it was... much like they are now with Focus.
As a matter of fact, I was playing a game just the other day as a commander watching over my marines as they attacked an alien hive. they started shooting and almost immediately started screaming for med packs(this was in vent hive on biodome). So I obviously started droping them but couldn't really see well what was hitting them, figured I'd ping to find me some aliens(I knew they had sensory). anyway, when I pinged my mouse froze up(as per the hl1 bug...it happens) and as the ping went out it revealed tons(i guess 8) ocs in their hive which ripped up my tream of 4 jpers floating around before my mouse went active again. ...yes, walls of lame work. yes, they're a pain in the ######, and yes, I won the game, ended up walking 4 heavies into the hive with gls and an hmg to slaughter that mess. but that initial shock slaughtered all my exwpensive jps and hmgs/shotties.
Man, I loved 1.04. Everything just felt Epic. Every patch after that, NS started to feel less like a strategy game, and more like a FPS. Some patches did add cool stuff though, it's not like it's all tragedy and QQ.

Good times.

I really hope that with this new dynamic level stuff NS2 will feel like playing NS for the first time every time. Its an incredible experience.
updates = happy players
