NS2 is the step forward in ns, not only will it give a whole new graphical world with alot more detail, it opens the door to the future of ns. NS2 shouldnt just be an "upgrade" in graphics, but an upgrade in everything, making it have the new look and feel to it once again, making it seem more futuristic and eerie.
In ns 1 our eyes were opened to a whole new play style, with strange alienated kharaa and of course the marine squad. Both awesome races both in need of another step up in evolution. I hope to post a few suggestions here along with images (I take no copyright in any they are made by other artists) to give a general idea to help towards the future of ns2
<b>The NS world in ns2</b>
NS2 needs new looks, new buildings and structures, but with new things we need ideas. there is some awesome ref pics <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=1610896170982061568&showtopic=98565" target="_blank">here </a> but I would also like to give a few general ideas here also, the future of ns 2 should move up , the two species have been at war for many years, and as such they would have had an obvious upgrade in technology to adapt and improve their chances against eachother. New worlds, New textures, New designs.

I beleive it is possible to implement an indoor/outdoor world for NS2, giving new lighting abilities to make a natural type of world, introducing things like a mix of both kharaa and human plants. having maps on kharaa homeworlds or on planets inhabited by humans. Creating new plantlife for the kharaa to give it an interesting alienating feel. The kharaa should now be evolving along with their infestation creating a world for them.

bringing in new designs and new plantlife gives a human/alien feel, balancing out the way things are seen and the way we react with surroundings. giving a secure feeling to certain areas for both races yet also keeping a visual interest in the surroundings.
<b>Weapons&Structures</b>
In ns when it was first released our brains became confused and amused with the new surroundings, aweing us with all the cool and fancy things we were introduced to. over time these things became less amusing and soon we lost interest in the structures looks and searched for new models. I beleive all structures and weapons need remakes giving them a more futuristic looks to them.

Weapons need a great remake, new animations and looks making them seem more futuristic and fit with the surroundings.
the commander chair is another example of lacking. New players are known to try to take control in the commander chair its appearance doesnt seem too much and being rather simple, blinds the fact it is for a superior with great leadership. Personally i beleive it needs to be greater in size, with this maybe only a maximum of 2-3 comm chairs to increase its importance. The commander chair needs to look like a commanders chair, with a more techy look and larger size it increases its importance to the team.

having new animations like the chair being out and ready and then pulling it up into a large machine with screens etc makes it seem more important than a simple chair with armour around it..

the marine structures lack in appearance and also do not fit with the surroundings. heres some examples of some interesting examples of structures which would fit towards ns2 giving them a more future feel

the alien structures could also be greatly improved to be more alive and less bland. Blending them to work with its surroundings making it look like it infact sticks to surfaces instead of just plopped on, anything from extra veins on the base and improving the way the chambers look, giving them a new evolved feel.

the hive has always bothered me, being nicknamed many genitala areas and not exactly resembling a hive. I feel it needs a really big makeover to look like some weird lifeform creature able to give birth to kharaa, looking much more different than it is, something like an alienish animal of somesort which is immobile and grows itself on surfaces to meet the needs of the colony.

it would still be considered a structure (why would you want to be a hive?) but would give it a more realistic appeal with the ability to reproduce asexually and give birth the kharaa.
<b>Armor</b>
marine armour lacks , its boring and isnt very threatening. I would love to see a more futuristic look for marine armour. Give it a more important feel with danger written over it.

<b>alien forms</b>
improving the looks of the kharaa is tricky but i beleive making them look slightly different will improve their threat.

<b>chamber abilities change looks</b>
one thing i would love to see is the abilities take from chambers change the appearance of the kharaa.
- carapace shows more leathery spiky type armour and thicker infestation over the skin
- andrenaline shows the body as slightly more muscular
- agility elongates the legs slightly
- scent of fear lengthens the face of the creature
- cloak changes the skin colour to a paler tone
simple things like these are possible but with current ns it would require many models, i am not sure if this would be required in ns2 but may be needed. but it would be awesome to see.
<b>Building surfaces</b>
making chambers and turrets buildable on uneven surfaces would increases tactics used. making more strategical designs to help defend certain points.
alien chambers being buildable on ceilings and walls would make it easier for larger kharaa to get past without needing to duck and jump over and around structures. gorges could make a more sucessful defensive station because of more building opportunities.
marines could also have ceiling turrets that require a different type of turret factory that sits on the side of the wall like a control panel to activate the turrets. the turrets themselves wont need to be built and would activate once the wall panel is build. the cost of ceiling turrets would be more expensive for this reason though, and their health would be alot less to balance gameplay.
<b>Ranks</b>
I feel creating ranks for ns maps would help greatly in ns2, making only certain ranks able to become commander or gorge.
eg-
1- marine
2- heavy marine
3- jetpacker
4- seargent
5- commander
6-?
1- skulk
2- lerk
3- fade
4- onos
5- gorge
6-?
the higher ranks are earned through experience and playing tactics, the way you play determines your rank, once you have gained that rank every game played will hold your rank from then on, it wont reset when you leave etc, you earn it and keep it.. to gain gorge or commander status you would need to have knowledgable ability in using commands and leadership.
with a new game if no one has rank 5 the game will enable it so players can be the gorge or commander.
<b>New character</b>
Adding a new alien or marine type to be in ns2 would be awesome, having an elite char for both teams which is only acessable at either 1- gaining rank 6 or 2- 3 hives+100 recourses or all structures + 3000 recources
having an elite force for marines and an elite type of onos creature with more damage and movement, both would lack in armour but the damage they do and their mobility makes them pretty powerful, their only weakness being the lack of armour.
<b>interactive world</b>
One thing open to us now is being able to interact with our surroundings, making barrels moveable, boarded up windows breakable and even solving puzzles by using surroundings.
giving a gorge the ability to use a web like structure to pull barrels around etc and making marines able to pull barrels around would be awesome, making us able to use objects around us to defend ourselves or even attack others with.
creating puzzles in maps could stimulate marines and kharaa to interact with surroundigns to receive rewards like recourse points or even givn recources by finding little things like food to give recources or health etc which spawn randomly around the map once every game.
making thigns like fire and water interact would help, running in fir sets you on fire but jumping in water will put it out.
<b>new abilities</b>
things like a knock back would help, marines being able to knock back using a guns base or having onoses able to headbutt or skulks able to gnarl a target causing them to bleed over time slowly for a short period of time.
lerks being able to blur mairnes vison with a face attack and gorges able to blind marines temporarily with a salival spit for a second or two while they escape.
heavy marines could electrocute with a defence shield ability which causes damage over time to kharaa and jetpackers able to use a kick to blur the vision of kharaa.
any of these could be great for a little help while fighting, but cannot be used for a certian amount of time after being used.

<b>alien forms</b>
improving the looks of the kharaa is tricky but i beleive making them look slightly different will improve their threat.

<b>chamber abilities change looks</b>
one thing i would love to see is the abilities take from chambers change the appearance of the kharaa.
- carapace shows more leathery spiky type armour and thicker infestation over the skin
- andrenaline shows the body as slightly more muscular
- agility elongates the legs slightly
- scent of fear lengthens the face of the creature
- cloak changes the skin colour to a paler tone
simple things like these are possible but with current ns it would require many models, i am not sure if this would be required in ns2 but may be needed. but it would be awesome to see.
<b>Building surfaces</b>
making chambers and turrets buildable on uneven surfaces would increases tactics used. making more strategical designs to help defend certain points.
alien chambers being buildable on ceilings and walls would make it easier for larger kharaa to get past without needing to duck and jump over and around structures. gorges could make a more sucessful defensive station because of more building opportunities.
marines could also have ceiling turrets that require a different type of turret factory that sits on the side of the wall like a control panel to activate the turrets. the turrets themselves wont need to be built and would activate once the wall panel is build. the cost of ceiling turrets would be more expensive for this reason though, and their health would be alot less to balance gameplay.
<b>Ranks</b>
I feel creating ranks for ns maps would help greatly in ns2, making only certain ranks able to become commander or gorge.
eg-
1- marine
2- heavy marine
3- jetpacker
4- seargent
5- commander
6-?
1- skulk
2- lerk
3- fade
4- onos
5- gorge
6-?
the higher ranks are earned through experience and playing tactics, the way you play determines your rank, once you have gained that rank every game played will hold your rank from then on, it wont reset when you leave etc, you earn it and keep it.. to gain gorge or commander status you would need to have knowledgable ability in using commands and leadership.
with a new game if no one has rank 5 the game will enable it so players can be the gorge or commander.
<b>New character</b>
Adding a new alien or marine type to be in ns2 would be awesome, having an elite char for both teams which is only acessable at either 1- gaining rank 6 or 2- 3 hives+100 recourses or all structures + 3000 recources
having an elite force for marines and an elite type of onos creature with more damage and movement, both would lack in armour but the damage they do and their mobility makes them pretty powerful, their only weakness being the lack of armour.
<b>interactive world</b>
One thing open to us now is being able to interact with our surroundings, making barrels moveable, boarded up windows breakable and even solving puzzles by using surroundings.
giving a gorge the ability to use a web like structure to pull barrels around etc and making marines able to pull barrels around would be awesome, making us able to use objects around us to defend ourselves or even attack others with.
creating puzzles in maps could stimulate marines and kharaa to interact with surroundigns to receive rewards like recourse points or even givn recources by finding little things like food to give recources or health etc which spawn randomly around the map once every game.
making thigns like fire and water interact would help, running in fir sets you on fire but jumping in water will put it out.
<b>new abilities</b>
things like a knock back would help, marines being able to knock back using a guns base or having onoses able to headbutt or skulks able to gnarl a target causing them to bleed over time slowly for a short period of time.
lerks being able to blur mairnes vison with a face attack and gorges able to blind marines temporarily with a salival spit for a second or two while they escape.
heavy marines could electrocute with a defence shield ability which causes damage over time to kharaa and jetpackers able to use a kick to blur the vision of kharaa.
any of these could be great for a little help while fighting, but cannot be used for a certian amount of time after being used.

About ranks: I don`t see any point in developing JPs if all the marines have 'marine' rank. Why should proto teck drops be restricted at all? And gorges <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> Poor aliens NEED RT`s, esp. at the beginning of the game, and they need gorges to build them. So gorges <u>must</u> be avaliable for everyone.
I'm all for NS2 to be new and interesting thats how i came to love the first NS, It was different, but keep some things for the nostalgia and original feel of the game, Its a big ask and even harder to do.
A lot of people seem to be purist and want to see NS1 on NS2 but i think that if they do that and don't come up with something new and different its just another FPS glossed up with better graphics like CS source.

We can only hope to hear from the developers what they have in mind for NS2 till then keep the ideas flowing.
I don't think the rank system is necessary. It's a bit redundant with the res system. It could also promote rambo play for marines which is a no-no. Commanders should be responsible for determining what marine gets what. Perhaps another resource type ala vespene gas would be better.
All those new abilities you are suggesting would look awesome with the right animations and effects. But I'm not sure if it's conducive to gameplay or usability. If new weapons are added to each lifeform/equipment, the game could get really complicated, especially for aliens.
That second image is freakin amazing, and totally the sort of grandose architecture I'd love to see in bureaucratic NS2 maps.
About that ranking system, I'd like to post this related link of my ideas on the matter. On a side note though, and an addition to the ranking.
Maybe it would be possible to get some mmorpg elements into play here. If you play a skulk most of the time you could specialise into the 3 main skills with a total of 9 talent points.
You start with 0 talent points and are able to gain up to 9 talent points, or even more (with more talents)
speed (4/5) every points gives x% more movement speed
stamina (2/5) every points gives x more HP
energy boost (3/5) every points gives x% faster regen
And for all other classes you can also gain 9 talent points (able to reset trough a console command perhaps)
