I've never seen that error message before, but I'd suggest rebooting your computer and trying again. If that doesn't work, I'd try reinstalling HL and NS.

1. Run you dxdiag.exe (you can easily get to it using the find file program) 2. Click on the "Sound" tab. 3. Change "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" to basic (one notch above the least)
