Yeah I know I know, when it's finished. But can we get a really really rough estimation? I would be sad if ns2 ends up taking 5 years to come out and the source engine has become outdated and a lot of people who would have bought it have lost interest. That would suck.
how far is ns2 right now development wise, anyways? I'm pretty clueless about how game development goes, so what else needs to be done?
Like I said, I just hope it doesn't end up taking as long as duke nukem forever or something. That ns2 preview video got a lot of people excited, including people who have no idea how ns has changed over the years. This gave me the impression that the people who tried ns for a day and then threw it away because of the steep learning curve will give ns2 a shot. That's a lot of people, and if ns2 comes out relatively soon, ns will definitely be the most popular 3rd party source mod. It'd be pretty damn cool if this happens, so please don't take too long <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Secondly, done when it's done mate ! There really is no point in trying to estimate a release date at this point in development, it's going to be almost impossible to predict as any number of things could happen between now and release.
@SpaceJesus: Nice picture in your signature, who is this on it?
So in other words, it will take "a while".
Isnt that what valve tried to prove with HL:S, anyway? I mean; surely they could reuse some of the code (Like building drop code, pop-up menu stuff etc.
I think NS2 will be released in 2007 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

For example, NS2 has "Gameplay mechanics and balance" at least 33% done, and likely more. Charlie said they'd be taking one-third NS, one-third modified NS, and one-third brand spanking new. NS1 has told them what worked, and also given them a sense of how different elements effect different (and sometimes seemingly unrelated) aspects of the gameplay. On top of that, theres a pretty well-defined visual style for NS. NS2 won't be the same, but it will build on that feel.
Overall, it seems like the dev's have a good vision of what their final game will shape up to be. The neat part is, they've already accomplished so much of that through NS, that not only do they have a lot of time to play with new cookies (read: DI), but also have a good sense of what works and what simply doesnt (gameplay-wise). This means more of their time can be put straight into things that work, and less time spent wasted on 'nice tries' or things which are simply not feasible.
In otherwords, they have a huge amount of experience, and a huge amount of familiarity with the NS evnironment/genre/gameplay-feel.
I'd say that that's a pretty huge chunk of the developmental cycle.
What's left? Implementing new things (i.e. DI and more?), integrating them into the gameplay. Balancing everything with them now included. Rewriting the code. Remodelling, texturing, sounding, building maps and character models.
NS2 has a strong backbone. Charlie and Max are now in the process of growing its vital organs, and then making some pretty skin.
instead enjoy ns while waiting and the time will fly past like a dream
NS2 is a stand alone game that is in its infancy. UWE is incredibly small right now, they have talent but not a lot of people. As of this post, their goal is to release a technology tech demo for the community to start mapping with. The fewest features possible will be included in this release, and most are probably still undecided.
So, give them a break. You want updates? Look at their blog. You want a release date, TODAY, for this game? That sir is out of the question.
Maybe, a solid year AFTER the tech demo has been released we can expect to hear where UWE stands on finishing this game. NS2 was just recently announced, the only thing we should expect from the devs is for them to take as much time as they need to give us a game that meets and exceeds our expectations.
I can say that we're trying to make this a quick project, especially as we need money from NS2 to live, so we're aiming to get something release sooner rather than later. I'm afraid that's all I can say.
im sure charlie wont torture us too much... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Anyway, i hope that they can make it as good and balanced as possible and add much new features. Good luck for dev team and thanks for exellent game you've already released.
E:typo
EDIT - I wouldn't be suprised if they have a beta in the next 3-6 months <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
well if you look at the FAQ they will be releasing a Test release end of March - which well pretty much in the next week or so <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Actually it says we were hoping to release it at the end of March. Arguably this is pretty confusing wording and should be changed.

hahaha...april april
no NS2 will release when its done, but im sure its like 2-3.Quartal of 2008
hey maybe we could have a lottery draw - the first 10 people to guess the exact release date - unknown till it happens - get a free copy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
By the time its finished, source will be by far dated.

lol end of march, i really would like to see some updated info on it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Can't wait, they're a little cash strapped atm so they'll be releasing it ASAP, tbh, that's pretty promising from an eager NS fan's point of view!
Im sure you'll make it great fellas.
i think 2008 Summer I-: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
