If you don't need to know the difference between a dollar and a cent, I envy you so so much. This isn't a "lack of basic math skills" this is like mistaking a 6-pack beer for a single can. Even the most basic of lifeforms <i>should</i> know that there's more beer in 6 cans than in one. (Note, I used beer examples because I was going to put rednecks somewhere in there, but then I decided not to. The example also works with donuts or whatever food that comes in value packs)

This is completely different than the difference between a dollar and a cent; this is a misunderstanding of decimals and fractions. I'm sure everyone knows that 2 dollars and 2 cents are different. The disconnect here happens when they saw fractions of a dollar and figured that fractions of a cent were the same. They didn't factor in the difference in value between a dollar and a cent, but that only came up because they can't relate two fractions to each other.

Speaking of which, anyone ever hear one of those stories where a person pays with $2 dollar bills(USD), the cashier thinks $2 dollars bills are fake and then calls the manager, then the manager in turn doesn't know if $2 dollar bills actually exist, then he calls the cop, and then the cops come and say it is real. The guy who handed the person a $2 dollar bill gets a free burrito(<i>referring to the taco bell story, but it has happened in other cases also</i>).
Similar cases includes someone actually taking a fake $200 bill with president George Bush on it, and etc. Or someone paying with two $500 dollar bills and think they're fake, and the same situation as the above paragraph occur.
Why don't they teach these people which bills are real or fake when they become a cashier? It only takes like 2 minutes to review which bills are real or which are fake.
It's probably one of those things they just assume you know, which is a terrible assumption because as we all know there are no depths to which the human mind cannot sink when it comes to intelligence.

The video wasn't terribly astonishing. I spent some time tutoring grade 12 students in calculus. After that, <i>nothing </i>phases me anymore.
I found this in a digg comment - it's the easiest way to explain to the customer service people that they're incorrect. Tell them to go to google, and type in "0.002 cents per kilobyte times 35893 kilobytes" (<a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=35893+kilobytes+times+0.002+cents+per+kilobyte" target="_blank">http://www.google.com/search?q=35893+kilob...ts+per+kilobyte</a>). They'll get the result "(35 893 kilobytes) times 0.002 (U.S. cents per kilobyte) = 0.71786 U.S. dollars".
I just wish the guy had thought of this during the call, because I really want to finally see someone at Verizon realize how stupid their mistake is.
They'd just say that Google is wrong or that it's a difference of opinion, trust me. Corporations don't accept that they are wrong, even if they have to break the laws of reality.
At first it was kind of funny with the representative just not making the connections, since he seemed to be trying. The manager, though, her virulence... *cringe* ...Want to punch her square in the [female-specific body part].

So does this mean the guy can get his 70$ billl scrapped and have it replaced with a 70cent bill? I mean he has generated that much internet publicity Verizon have to do something about it.
And what about the rest of Verizon's customers that do or don't notice this?

This has been discussed before in this thread.
First of all, you learn the difference between cents and dimes in preschool, and probably before that when you learned how to talk compared to learning how to spell words as you live your life.
Second of all, not everyone on these forums first language is English, so they may make spelling mistakes.
Third of all, on the internet some people do not care to check their spelling, they just type in what they think is how it's spelled and then type it. In certain cases where correct spelling is needed, usually most of the time the person will check it and spell it correctly, whether by using a dictionary, spell checker, or by just looking over it again and say "that's not right".
As long as you can understand what the person is trying to say, it's fine.

Let's hope they also offer ENG002 - <b>Remedial</b> Spelling
Really it's kind of hypocritical to get incensed about a lack of basic math skills (which lots of people don't have because hey, they don't need them) when you yourself show similar deficiencies in a topic that's just as critical.
