Dupiclate cd key issue

i think after reading through all these posts i've finally gathered everything i need to get ns running :/, however when i try to install my half life to steam by typing in my cd key it gives me a duplicate error. I used to play this game, and i think its a duplicate because i already had it. Anyways i read through their troubleshooting and it seems like i have to pay 10$ fill out some form and a number of other hassles... Does anyone know how i could simply look up the account with my cd key and see if it might have been one of my old ones or something, or know if there is a simpler solution?

p.s. i've only had 1 steam account, but i did change my email in my settings at some point, i'm not sure if this would change anything but it might help to know.

If you had an account before, you could try some of your old emails as account names and see if it lets you answer a 'secret question' and have the password reset. But If you can't remember the account name, there isn't any way to get it back.

If that dosn't work, really the only option you have is to rebuy Half-Life. It is possible to send them your physical CD key, but it would be a huge hassle, taking weeks/months, and would cost about the same just to buy the game again. If you can find a box/jewel case copy go for that, otherwise its $15 on Steam. (Or $10 for HL by itself without expansions/TFC)

does it count as me completely changing accounts if i only changed my email, yet my screen name is the same? I think something might have been messed up because when i installed the latest ns thing it went to steam/steamapps/ and then a directory with my old e-mail adress on it.

Huh? So are you able to log in to your Steam account (one with HL on it)? If you can then yea NS might be installing into the wrong directory. This shouldn't be the case if you have only made one account though.

When you install NS and it asks for the directory, make sure the correct account is there "...\valve\steam\steamapps\[account name]\half-life"

nah, i can log into my account but it only has hl2, hl source and cs... i used to be able to run ns with steam though so i'd think i should have hl somehow... but that was a lot of upgrades ago so maybe something changed?

It is possible that you have more than one Steam account, and each has different games associated with it. For instance, back before HL2 was released, I had a steam account with Half-Life. When I purchased a package deal that included both HL1 and HL2, I created a new account for that package deal instead of purchasing it through my original account. Now instead of that package "overwriting" my legal rights to my old CD key & license of HL1, I have 2 accounts that have HL1 (the newer of which has HL2 as well).

Regardless of how many accounts you have, if you *know* you used to log into an account in the past that had HL1, you'll need to find a way into that account and/or use methods like the $10+paperwork you've already mentioned.

Could it be you just do not have HL1 installed? Is it displayed in your Game list in Steam? If so right click and you may get 'Install Game', click it and you will download the game!

Otherwise you were using another Steam login and cannot use the CD-key again. Only cheap/fast way around it is to remember the old email address you used to sign up to Steam with.

turns out my actual old account name was my old e-mail, and i made a new account with a new e-mail... i got into the old account and it has hl in it. Thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it =).

also one last question if anyone cares to answer it, its not a big deal but is there any way i could transfer the games i have on my old account to my new account? Or does that involve some long intricate process?

sadly Valve has specifically stated there is no way to transfer games between accounts. Who knows if that will change in the future.
